Colombia Landing - Bogota

The weather has been pretty rubbish since we got into Bogota, Colombia. Rain storms and overcast skies has given the city a very gloomy and dark look. It rained so hard yesterday that there was literally a river running down Avenue Jimenez in the centre of La Candelaria, the historic centre where we are staying. We were caught in it and sought refuge in a door way for an hour. La Candelaria, in this weather at least, is not quite what we expected. It is much more run down than we thought it w...

The New York of South America

I left one big city for a bigger one. Bogota, the country's capital is a huge metropolis where the streets share smog belching buses carrying the middle class, Mercedes Benz' moving the rich in style, and to this day, horse drawn carts and the random donkey moving some poor personīs **** to wherever it needs to go. It's not as appealing as I remember it but I came here specifically to visit some old friends from my first time through back in 2005. My reunion with Caroline and her now ex-boyfr...

cOlOmbia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Arrived into Bogota on Sunday the 6th after spending the night between the South Beach Hostel and Miami airport. I was pretty tired and a little anxious, as this signaled the 'real' start to the trip. The flight was with the Chilean airline - LAN (my new favourite airline - good food, service and great entertainment system).

Approaching Bogota I was impressed by the remoteness and the mountainous terrain on the run in to the city...was certainly different to the US. The airport was fa...

... able to eat it all. Had some maize, yucca, and a nice chicken broth. Afterwards we stopped for a café and then headed off to see some sights. Unfortunately we had a late start and therefore were unable to go into any of the museums, but we were able to see the public sights and I was able to get some fine photos as well.

When we were coming back later at night, we realised that Bogotá can ...

Motorcycle Barrio

Gloria, Michel's housekeeper, told us we should take a taxi into town if we wanted to see t the Museo d'Oro - Gold Museum - but we ended up wall - which we did because the city is so big we figured we would take taxis for a couple of days until we understood how the city was laid out. Taxis are really really cheap in Bogota - the fares are anywhere from 3,000 pesos to the most I paid was 11,000 pesos ($5.25) to take me all the way ...

Fairwell to Bogotá

This is probably the last day that I will spend in Bogotá. Next I will head up to the Carribean coast for the second biggest carnival/party in South America. I'm still hoping to find somewhere cheap to stay there but I'm not sure that its likely. My time in Bogotá has been alot of fun. I have visited an underground Cathedral cut out of salt (which they are still mining and you can hear the explosions from the cathedral) and a huge ...

Colombia part 2

After many requests I have finally gotten around to writing my second entry. I am sorry for my lack of communication and updating but writing blogs is a bit more tiring than I expected. I have been on the road now for over 4 months with many new experiences and new countries under my belt. I last left off in the Lost City where I finished my 6 day trek. After leaving the Lost City I headed south to San Gil, Colombia to meet up with ...
