Low caving and high culture
Although I am in Amsterdam at the moment, this entry will be mainly about my whistle stop tour through Austria and Germany and also my last few days in Budapest. On Friday Josh and I decided to sign up for caving, especially as it was my first really rainy day since Russia - and we judged being underground was the place to be in such conditions! …
The Acquainting
Excope stayed here on Oct 7, 2010 during their trip titled: Amsterdam, Three and Out.
Amsterdam!!
Amsterdam is a city full of amazing canals, beautiful architecture, and a plethora of museums. It was for THESE REASONS ONLY that a group of 14 Canadian interns departed the quiet, serene life in Baden for a weekend away…
On Friday afternoon, we all left work early (I love half-day Fridays) to catch a train to Basel …

Historical Traveler Reviews The Bulldog Hotel Amsterdam
Great Hostel but watch out for some of the Staff.
Ill put my review in parts:
The staff:Theo, Ricardo and Sara are super nice and very helpful! The guys work at night. There was also one dutch woman which is very nice but I couldnt get her name. Now for the rest of the staff.. Well they are just plain rude as can be.
I was in an all girl room until one night this guy walks in and when we went to ask for him to be put in another room, one of the managers said that there was a problem and thats why he was put in our room. We told her fine but please put him somewhere else we were in an all girl room. She had asked if we had any humanity and asked where we were from. Since none of us answered she said you're problably american. So I guess she ment if your american you dont have humanity.
Great part of it is: Location, Lobby it looks like its a 5 star hotel. The bar is nice and the food is pretty good for the price.
Bad part: The rooms are only cleaned when someone leaves and thats usually the bed. I was there for 4 nights and the bathroom was cleaned the day I got there and the night before I left. I also noticed (which made me kind of sick) that when they make the beds only the comforter is changed and not the bottom sheet. That grossed me out.
I only paid 22 euros per night and I met some great people. I guess it depends on how tolerant u can be if you want to stay here.
Fine Budget Hostel
Let's get one thing straight: if you're used to The Ritz & The Hilton you're hardly gonna book this place. However, if all you're after is somewhere to crash out that's comfortable and welcoming, without any frills, then this place is ideal.
Situated slap-bang in the centre of the Red Light District, you are right in the middle of the action - whether that's partying, boozing, smoking or shagging! Five minutes walk from Dam square and (once you know the shortcuts) you can get to Centraal station in about 10 minutes. Nowhere in Centrum is too far from this hostel.
Staff were very friendly and we never experienced any problems at all. Me and my frined stayed in dorm 103 (by coincidence it's the room in the photo of Jeff from the US), which was mixed sex with 12 beds. On the first night we came in and everyone else was already asleep. On the second night we were one of the first ones to bed & those coming in later were all very considerate.
Toilet & shower facilities were absolutely fine - nice wet room style shower. One minor problem was the light in the loo cuts out after about 3 minutes and there;s no window. It's awkward to open the door to re-set the light when your kecks are round your nkles! Full-length lockers are provided - one per person, with padlocks available to buy at the reception.
I'll be going back again at the end of the year and this time I'll be taking a bigger party of friends with me.
Recommended.
Bulldog nice staff not
ok this place was nice... modern updated.. clean ... had a real cool bar ... breakfast kinda yukky but I guess that is just tradional dutch breakfast... ok the staff... lets see.. out of the 3 people I encountered 1 was nice... One lady was just and incredibly difficult giving me and other guests the hardest time she could... she was always there working or not ..vampire like... luckily when we checked in we got the nice lady. The other guy lied to me about the laundry because he could not find the key (said oh it is too late you will wake up the guest ... 10 pm red light district come on!!!)... therfore I had to take my dirty clothes with me to ireland... thanks a million!
Great Hostel, Rude Staff!!!
We had a great stay in this hostel where we able to drink till late in the bar and stay even later when the bar was closed. Even though we had a really enjoyable stay here, I have to say that the staff were very cheeky at times. I would have thought it would be a great place to work but they were just rude and seemed like they didnt want to be there at all. Apart from this I would recommend people to stay here, it is a great hostel.
What a cheek!!!
We have just returned from a long weekend at the bulldog hostel/hotel. The place was very clean, friendly and the room was great too. Most of the time we were out so was hardly in the room at all as there was so much to do outside. We were told on arrival that we were not allowed to smoke in the rooms as the fire alarm would be set off, and we could get a 50 euro fine for this if it did!!! That was okay we respected there wishes as the room looked new too ( they have been doing renovations). The only thing we did do was make up joints to take out with us to the coffee shops, etc. The first thing we noticed was how strong the 1st floor (which is where our room was) smelt of smoke, joints, etc. On departure of our stay at the bulldog we were told there was a problem!!! We were asked if we had been smoking in our room, which obviously we hadnt........I personally am not a smoker but my partner is,so when we were told that the alarm would go off if smoking I was very paranoid and told my partner that there was no way he would be smoking..hence we were out all day and evening!!! We told them no we had not but was told that either we were lieing or the cleaner was as apparently the cleaner had told them the room smelt of smoke!!! My partner is a smoker as I said so his whole person smells of smoke and clothes!!! We told them that the whole upstairs as you get out of the lift smells of smoke,etc............but they said no it did not!!! We were quite upset by the fact we had been accused of this as we had not been smoking in the room. Fortunately we did not get a fine of any kind, but one memeber of staff was most rude about the whole situation!!! Other than this little problem we did have a great stay in amsterdam and the hotel and would recommend the bulldog. Well enough of my moaning!!!! Enjoy
Clean, safe but unsocial
stayed at the Bulldog Sept 2/3 2004, found the hostel to be clean, the staff friendly and the location great. Very disappointed at the social scene, I was very used to meeting tons of people at hostels, and only really met one other girl also travelling alone. So either I checked in to late and everyone was too stoned to talk when I got there, or I didnt get stoned soon enough to be clueless about it. If you are travelling with someone this is a great place to stay, but single travellers beware... you wont meet people the same way you do at other hostels.
Glad we only stayed for a couple of nights
When I went there it was in the middle of being renovated, I think there was 2 floors left to do,..........Guess what my boyfriend & I had to be put on one of those floors!! The room wasnt very welcoming, we stayed in a 16 bed room.
the first night was fine as all the beds werent full & everyone was quite quiet, however the second night was very much louder, people were walking in & out through the early hours. Me & my boyfriend had to get up at 5:30 to catch our train & still people were up& about. the toilet in the room wasnt very nice either, it smelt like bad sewage.
However, saying that the bulldog is probably finished by now & the rooms are probably lovely (I looked a few floors down at the ones that had been refurbished & they did really look nice) so if you do want a hotel near to the red light district that also has a bar where you can smoke! Bulldog is the place for you.
I only gave it an ok review as when I went there the rooms wrent extremely good at that time.
Mushrooms covered with mold !!!!!
Never again. We did not stay in the hotel, but we bought some Philosopher Stones in the Bulldog Smartshop. They were over and over covered with mould. We bought them and could not see the mould because it was quite dark in the Shop. My husband and me had eacht one of the mushrooms and they tasted very bitter. When we were in our hotel room we saw that the mushrooms were coveres with mould.
Great double room at the Bulldog for only 80 Euro!
Staid at the Bulldog budget hotel ad hostel May 11th and 12th, 2003. I had a double room for 80 Euro. It was as good a room as you will find at any 3 or 4 star hotel, just no phone or TV. The room was newly decorated and furnished in a 50's motif. Will probaly sta there again.
"smoking" allowed in the "Chill out" room. Only complaint was I never got any messages and they made me wait until 3pm to check in.
