... touch. The Li river is very shallow at this time of year and the boats must have very shallow draught but it was a very beautiful trip past groves of bamboo, little fishing villages, ancient towns only reachable by boat and mile after mile of limestone peaks. The Chinese are very imaginative and like to name different shapes after various people and animals. Frankly my imagination mostly didn't stretch that far, but I was glad to take in the beauty all around. Arriving ...

We were appreciative that we could sit and chat amongst ourselves about the day (in peaceful surroundings). Ping got Griffin a teddy bear birthday cake and when we returned to the hotel, the staff brought Griffin a fruit plate decorated like a bird. It was a very, very good ...

... 60 NZD per person per day for China. Including everything: accommodation, food, transport, attractions, etc. Over our 7 week stay, we averaged $55 pp, pd so a pretty good guess! Biggest cost was accommodation (so we stayed in backpacker dorms and rooms) and attractions (sometimes up to $30 pp for entry into a park!). Train trips were cheap, especially as most of them counted as a nights accommodation. Food expect to pay $20 for two people for a decent dinner at a ...
