Abel Tasman to Punakaiki

We got a new bus driver in Picton to take us to Abel Tasman national park and after a 5 hour drive we arrived into Marahau where we were staying. The national park scoots around the coast with great walks through the forest and along the coastline. After a 12k walk we jumped on a catamaran and sailed back to see the coast from a different angle, …

So we set off from Abel Tasman, fairly uneventful trip apart from the coach door kept swinging open meaning someone's bag actually fell into the road! Luckily a skydive can was behind us and picked it up, there was a tense moment figuring out whose bag it was lol was quite a long bus journey, but we did stop at the pancake rocks which were pretty …

From Nelson I travelled to Punakaiki with its famous Pancake Rocks and Blowholes. These formations were pretty impressive. The best was Putai blowhole, which during high tide produces huge eruptions from the blowhole, the blast also leads to beautiful rainbows being produced. The strange limestone rock formations were created 30 million years ago, …

Riwaka to Murchison to Punakaiki

A travel blog entry by cleavers

Over the next four days, I will be driving almost 1,000km in my quest to see as much of South Island as I can. Crazy? Perhaps. But with some careful planning, I'm hoping that this will actually work in my favour and I will get to see and do more than anticipated. Take today for example. My planned route took me from Riwaka to Punakaiki - a driving …

The next leg of our trip took us from Nelson through the Buller gorge, which had some spectacular scenery then via Westport down to Punakaiki where we spent the night. The section from Westport down to Greymouth(which we will pass through next) is listed as one of the best 10 road trips to do. We weren't disappointed either with the road running …

The lodges we stayed in were in the middle if a forest but our facilities were really good, 2 showers, 2 toilets, games, blankets, a heater a comfy, squishy beds, had a really good nights sleep here, also super close to the beach which was amazing!

This Hostel is set in a beautiful l;ocation in the middle of the Rainforest with only a 5 minute walk to a nice beach. The staff were so friendly and picked me up from the bus stop which was great. It reminded me of my stay in the Honduran Cloudforest, but the facilities were considerably better! Such a relaxing place, I wish I was staying longer.
