Lovely town, shame about the weather....

After a very, very long, cramped journey north, we finally arrived in the Argentinian Lake District town of San Carlos de Bariloche at around midnight, completely knackered and ready for bed. Arriving so late (and therefore completely oblivious to the beautiful Lago Nahuel Huapi lapping at its shores a mere 50 m from the bus terminal) our first thoughts were to thank god that we had already booked a hostel and could just jump in a taxi. Seemed like a simple idea but nothing is ever straightfo...

San Carlos de Bariloche

14th to 16th March 2008 I finally caught the bus from San Martin on Friday, 14th after a 4 hour wait at the bus station, heading for Bariloche. Bariloche is Argentina´s largest lake district city. It sits on the shores of Lake Nahual Haupi and backed with mountain peaks. It seems to me that it is a larger version of San Martin with plenty of chocolate shops, which I have resisted up to now. It also seems more touristy than San Martin. The past few days in Bariloche, I have been relaxing, just...

Bariloche-the Real Patagonia

I just arrived here late this afternoon. I went to the bus station, sans ticket, and WHAT! no seats left on the 10:30AM bus south. So, I bought a 2PM ticket, plugged my computer in at the restaurant, and jumped onto some WiFi there, and plowed thru my blog more. Did I finally snap when I saw the mile markers out the bus window! 2100 KM mile marker. It can´t be...but yes, it is 2100 KM to the end! Hwy 40! That convers to about 1200 MILES! On a bus? The weather had shifted in San Martin, rain c...

Wet n' Wild in Bariloche

I´ve ended up spending quite a few days in San Carlos de Bariloche. I kind of sped through Bolvia and so have arrived in Patagonia well ahead of schedule. I would like to travel further south towards the South Pole, see the glaciers. It isn´t quite summer here yet so Route 40, down the left hand side of the country, is still closed. I could take the plane but for 250 quid that is a bit beyond my budget. Someone in the hostel suggested the 4 day trip on the cargo boat from Peurto Montt in Chil...

Bariloche adventures

Well the bus journey wasn't that bad actually. Watched 3 films, slept a fair bit on our superior seats that went almost flat (called cama coche in SA). Next day managed to get a late deal on white water rafting in Bariloche. Felt quite scared before but when the time came around it was really amazing. We rafted down the River Manso into Chile through the most amazing landscape. The rapids are classed as III and IV but as the river was lower this time of year probably not as harsh. Brilliant f...

Alpine(ish) adventures

About Bariloche...Crazily Swiss in the heart of Argentinian Lake District. Most of the city and surrounding area is swiss alpine style, and set around on edge of a huge lake. Fantastic views of blue water, blue skies and grey green mountains and valleys. Muchos chocolate shops. Chalets constantly confuse you as to where you are. There are even St Bernard dogs in a variety of sizes for you to have your photos taken with. It´s full of tourists but beautiful nonetheless. I loved it. Here´s my la...

Bariloche

Crossing the border into Argentina

... was the first place we've been where we've never actually booked a place prior to getting there, so we had to look for a hostel for 5 people, which isn't that easy in Bariloche. We went to 3 places that were fully booked before settling down someplace on San Martin. It was fine, but it was the ¨worst¨ place I´ve stayed at so far in South America, with dark rooms, cramped washrooms, and a common area that has nothing to rave about...

... say i could easily stay here a very long time. Also needless to say should i actually do so, i would probably have to buy two bus seats to fit my ever expanding rear end into! However i am a bit of a sucker for sweet things, so my heart is won in this country already, both with the chocolate, and the dulce de leche (apparently milk jam... but to us otherwise known as caramel) than comes both with and on everything. I thought the sweetened condensed ...

God doesn't want us to do the Paso de las Nubes.

... later, I was reunited with them. Mind you, an "international phone call" to Puerto Montt from Bariloche is like an "international phone call" to Phillip Island from Melbourne. Grr... So we were delayed by a day while waiting for shoes to turn up. But revised plan (2) is still good, until... Problem: Someone stole Ellen's hiking boots. For real! She left them on a window sill in the hostel while she was taking a nap, and apparently someone took them from the ...
