Our 1st full day in Costa Rica. We had breakfast in the hostel, to save on the pennies as it was very expensive in Costa Rica compared with where we had been previously in Nicaragua. We discussed over breakfast what our route was going to be through Costa Rica and weighed up the options of how we were going to plan it. The best options we believed …

Once we were all packed and ready to go, we hopped on the shuttle down to town to get the bus to Rivas, a main town in Nicaragua where regular shuttles left for the boarder to Costa Rica. Whilst in town we went back to the coffee house for breakfast as yesterday's was so nice. We had went for different options this time and they were equally as …

... morning at Jireh we awoke to no rain , even some
sunshine, and after a quick cornflakes breakfast in our room checked out and
drove further around the huge Lago Arenal, some 40 odd kms long and about 4
wide. We took an “interesting” looking side track off the main road that the
GPS said to follow to get to our next destination and found ourselves once
again on the slippery stuff. Loose, wet gravel on a slope away and up from the
lake shore ...

... which empties into the ocean until I came to the docks from which boats will take you across the river to Playa Grande and the protected turtle reserve, and for boat tours up the river. I stopped and talked to one of the boat operators to get the skinny on taking a boat tour up the river later in the day. It didn’t sound interesting enough, so I decided later not to do it; and did nothing but lounge on the beach and around the pool all day.

... and take some more iuprofen. Then I headed down to meet Kailani for surf lesson. My shoulder was still hurting, so I just ended up taking the 10'2 out to be on the safe side. The waves were pretty big. I told Maxi to put on his "magic wax" to help catch waves. Kailani and I headed out, Eben came a long, he wasn't taking lessons, he was just going to see how his ribs felt, as he hurt the other side on some crazy water slide up in La Fortuna. Kai and I discussed that I ...

Lovely hostel, good facilities but don't go in wet season

The facilities were excellent, it was a little out of town but easy to walk to. However our first room attracted so many bugs, it was mosquito season and other bugs were loving the wood frames round the windows so we had to move rooms as I wouldn't have slept a wink. Our second room was pretty much bug free.
