Sani bonani!
After spending few days in Maputo, walkking the streets, shopping in the local market (and eating some random, but tasty, fruits) and hanging out in the local jazz cafes we woke on Monday morning with the aim of getting to Durban. Unfortunately the red wine, whilst being essential for enjoying the jazz, put paid to this idea and it took us a few hours to crawl out and pack up the tent.
We decided to split our journey and boarded a minibus for Swaziland, about 1/3 of...

Here I am again with some pictures for you. I will be going to Umlazi on Wednesday to stay and will meet my Zulu friends. I cant wait to see my friend Precious who I met when she was 13 and now she is 18. Having a very good time, although the weather is very weird, really hot for days, then it goes cold.
Durban, South Africa dith31I am staying with a coloured family in Sydenham for a few weeks, I met them 4 years ago. Has been good to catch up. I did one day of substitute teaching with grade ones, never again lol...and meeting lots of people and family members and eating good food. I have also visited a hospice, gone to Ushaka world, like Sea world, and see a lion look in the window at the car I was in when we went to a lions park. Having some problems downloading pics, will put some up when able.
Durban, South Africa dith31... it’s there. It’s like the anchor tenant in an otherwise dismal semi-abandoned mall. So since I’m feeling upbeat I decide to go get my teeth worked on, replacing a filling that popped out. At first I thought I’d passed a kidney stone through my mouth… till I felt a big hole with my tongue. In poorer countries dental work usually doesn’t require much of a wait, in this case thirty minutes, enough time for the dental ...
Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa hardiek... burgers, blue cheese, cream cheese, ice cream, spices, baked goods, lunch meat etc. It was glorious and overwhelming all at the same time and the crazy part is its only about 30 min from Lesotho's increasingly disappointing capital "city" Maseru. The down side of all these "signs of developement" is the still blaringly apparent racial divisions and tensions. The majority of people shopping in SPAR were white or Indian; the majority- if not all- of ...
Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa kristanreedToday is Wednesday and we arrived in Durban last night. We had planned to go directly to the Drakensberg Mountains but once on the bus realized there was no good way to get there without a car. Luckily, we had the number for Jackie's Beechwood Guest House in Durban. She was fantastic; she picked us up at the bus station and was so helpful in our search for ways to get to the Drakensberg. Her Guest House was beautiful and the nicest placed we have ...
Durban, South Africa aksheehan... did a lot of reading in a textbook on play therapy at home to make up some of the hours. I'm really discouraged with all the illness I've encountered since I arrived here. Louise, Ingrid (another volunteer), and Liz have all told me how they got sick very often the first few months that they worked with the children as they carry so many germs and their bodies weren't used to fighting them. After a while, they said that ...
Durban, South Africa rroesch... fine in low tide cause there were stepping stones across! However, the stones disappeared in high tide & we had to take the long way!! Did a hike in the rain to the 'Hole in the Wall' which took about 4 hours! Also did a cultural tour of a local Xhosa traditional village - definitely an eye opener! I'll not be marrying a South African man ...
Durban, South Africa bernadinemAfter Mozambique and Swaziland I went back into South Africa and stayed in St Lucia for a few days. It was really nice there, the sun was shining and there was a lot going on. I'm now heading into more 'surfer' territory so there are more shops for me to be tempted by!
In St Lucia I went to the beach, hitched a lift to Cape Vidal (the local holiday spot with great snorkelling), saw hippos roaming the streets at night (not something I can say I think I'll ever ...
Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa vickicooper... Then we drove towards Durban, had our usual lunch on the road (Leo used his new chair.)and continued to a hotel called "On the Beach" - a small place with an even smaller gate that took the truck could barely get through. Some very exact maneuvering was required. Lotta and I went for a walk on the beach while the others went shopping in Durban. In the evening we had dinner in an Indian restaurant ...
