After a seven hour train trip that was lightyears away in terms of comfort from the last train I had been on (I got a seat and a tray table!) I got into Athens at about midnight, and still suffering from go-where-the-wind-blows-me syndrome, with nowhere to stay. I went with a brit couple to the nearest hostel to Larissa station, which unfortunately for all of us was full. They went off in search of a cheap hotel room, not a problem when you were paying in GBP and in a dodgy cheap hotel Mecca....
Athens, Greece alicecrabtreeWe just got here in the pouring rain, buts its kind of nice for a change of pace. We had a great dinner at a Tavern, wine, fresh salad and wine. Staying at a hostel and we are happy to be on our own for a bit. Athens is a bit cold, but we both have to admit, we already love being here. More to come later. -A P.S.: I've uploaded more photos from South Africa and Tanzania. I'll try to get some in for Egypt tomorrow if I get a chance. -E
Athens, Attica, Greece appabobAthens: Ernie and I have had a great time just doing as we please here in Athens. Mind you, it is NOT cheap here. Its been a bit pricey just for us to eat, but we have thoroughly enjoyed our rest. The weather today was perfect. It has been a bit cloudy and rainy over the past 2 days, but today the heavens opened up and Ernie and I had a great time just climbing and circling the Acropolis (it took us 2 days to do it, but we got around to seeing the Acropolis). We knew today was going to be goo...
Athens, Attica, Greece appabobSo begins my (Jonathan) adventure. After an expensive train ride to Bari from Rome and then a 16 hr ferry ride to Patra and then a 3 hr bus rýde, i finally made it to Athens, Greece. Along the way met some real nice Canadians and was assisted by numerous Greeks. After finding my way to the hostel, I met a few roomates and we made our way to check out the Acropolis at sunset and have some dinner (what would turn out to be the first of many trips to a local gyro restuarant). It was a nice start...
Athens, Attica, Greece broncosSo... finally off the boat. We said good bye to everyone else... some were continuing on a land tour of Greece with Contiki. Hopefully if I ever go to Darwin or Brisbane in Australia I've got a place to stay! So Jen and I found our hotel, but it was really sketch, so we were able to finagle a 4 bed room in the best hostel in town (Student and Traveller's Inn). Both our guidebooks had given it a huge thumbs up, and it is really nice. We're finding that we have to double check between our guide...
Athens, Greece cauterizeHello! Cris typing again. Adam and I are in Athens today, and we took no time to get over jet lag. The plane ride was great, and we watched "The Island" the movie. It was pretty good, but some big holes in the story. We heard rumors of free alcohol on overseas flights, but unfortunately that was a big lie, at least for Delta airlines. We got into Athens and found someone who spoke english to get us on the right train to the city. We jumped on and rode for about 20 minutes. We then took it to ...
Athens, Greece ckodiakWe left Istanbul on the morning of January 23rd at 830am. It was a sleeper train so we were able to get a whole cabin to ourselves, when we need to get some sleep it was long ride. When the train began Jimmy said Our we going to go other this fast, and sure enough it was. Our train arrived at the Turkey/Greece border about 5-6 hours after we left. They took our passports and dropped us off at a stop with only three buildings a ticket office, a restaurant that only served beer and packaged chi...
