Amsterdam

So upon leaving Munich and the craziness that was Oktoberfest we headed to Amsterdam. We originally were suppose to head to Vienna, Austria but our friend, Jason, that we met in Greece while staying at the Pink Palace in Corfu was going to be in Amsterdam before flying home to the states. So we switched our plans and decided to meet up with him in Amsterdam. That is the beauty of traveling spontaneously throughout Europe...you can switch your plans very easily when you meet fun people that yo...

16 - 19th June: Amsterdam!

So we've arrived! Amsterdam is certainly a strange city. If you ever wanted to see canals, bikes (and plenty of them), wonky houses and trams then look no further! After landing and taking the train from the airport to the city centre at 10am local time, we wasted no time in getting some nosh and a nice pint of heineken :) After hiring bikes, I can see why it's the prefered optoon around here! You don't get run over if you're on a bike, but if your not on a bike you are in threat of being kno...

Chapter 1 - Western Europe: Beginnings

Monsieur, with these updates you are really spoiling us! Well don't get used to it, it's dead easy to get internet here but we'll see how that goes.
Well I have officially survived my first day on the continent! But I suppose I ought to say more than that. This update might cover details that will be skipped over in future - but they are all new now! Also this is likely to be one of my more packed days before the general monotony of life on the road begins in earnest.
Had a bloody awf...

Holland, Netherlands, Dutch. I'm confused.

The People: I shouldn't comment much on the Dutch, one of my lectures at University was Dutch, was always talking about Holland and was very pro Dutch. Suffice to say he was a total a ******. Actually the Dutch seemed like nice enough people, anyone who is willing to play a game of chess on a life-size board is cool. The Fun: We checked out some art, and saw Anne Frank's house. It was incredible, seeing the actual house she lived in preserved exactly as it was after the Nazis sacked it. Unfor...

Not much if you ain't Dutch

Our [first] stay in Amsterdam was quite brief, only 1.5 days. However, we did a lot of walking around the city centre. Our day started off by going to the Sex Museum which provided a lot of food for thought to say the least and some images we both wish we had not seen. The museum even had umm, photos, from a private collection dating as far back as 1860 showing people in some rather compromising positions. Your great-great-great-grandfather or grandmother might not have been as innocent as yo...

You know you're in Amsterdam when...

You know you're in Amsterdam when you wake up in your dorm to find two completely naked German women standing in the middle of it. You know you're in Amsterdam when you nearly get hit by a bicycle about 12 times a day. You know you're in Amsterdam when on a historical walking tour of the city your tour guide gives you detailed advice on the finer points of space cake and which 'coffee shops' sell the locally grown stuff rather than the apparently inferior Moroccan stuff. I just got in from a street party for Pride here in Amsterdam. I really didn't do much else today, aside from wander the streets and have food. The party was fun, but it's really hard to meet people at a place like that. First of all, it's so crowded that you can barely move and people are pushing you; secondly, it's far too loud to speak, so you can't strike up a conversation with anyone; and thirdly, unlike a club, only a few people are dancing, between being pushed around, so you can't eve...

Not too shabby, but REALLY HOT in the room!!!!

from JeffCali
This was my first time staying at a hostel and it was a pretty good experience. The location is an A+. You are far enough from the red light district to feel really safe, while in the center of Liedesplein which is a lot of fun too.... and a casino is about a 3 minute walk from here. I had a 4 per room place and our window barely opened up (this was normal) but in July, I could not fall asleep because it was EXTREMELY HOT. I was downstairs in the lobby area for most of the night begging for a fan because it was too hot to sleep. I finally bought sleeping pills the next day and slept, occasionally waking up wet from sweat. Other than this problem, I enjoyed the place so I recommend staying here anytime but the summer months. Breakfast was included as well and it was buffet style (style because not much to choose) but still a great value. I recommend this only on months that aren't hot. I ended up staying elsewhere when I returned the final night to catch my flight back home the following day (It was called Luxer and it had a T.V., air, etc. for only EUR 30 more than StayOkay which I foudn worth it). Anyway - have fun !

Unhygienische Bedingungen, Flöhe in den Betten

from A TripAdvisor Member

Hotel NICHT EMPFEHLENSWERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very good value

from Teosm
A very positve experience.

The hostel is nice and clean, the rooms are quite big and confortable, the breakfast is very rich, it is not far from the centre, close to the Van Gogh museum and in a very quiet street in the middle of Vondelpark.

It's probably much better than most of the 2/3 stars Amsterdam's hotels but the price is more similar to a 1 star hotel!

Great Hostel - clean & central

from A TripAdvisor Member
I had not stayed in a hostel before staying at the Vondelpark, so I was a little anxious to how it would be. However, I and the others I stayed with, were all very pleased with it as it was clean, quiet but very central.

We arrived late having caught a tram from the Centraal station (1,2 or 5) to Leidseplein. We booked in no probs as the hostel is staffed all through the night.

I am unable to comment on the quality of the breakfast at the hostel as we missed it both mornings (served til 10am) - but we found many places around the city serve a good cooked breakfast.

I stayed in a room for 6 with 5 friends, so did not share with those I did not know. The room was a good size, with a table and a few chairs, 6 lockers (take your own lock) and a seperate toilet and shower. The wash hand basin was in the room so the facilities could be used by many at once. There were plenty of electric points and each bed had its own reading light.

After checking out we were able to securely lock away our bags in lockers (in lobby), whilst we went out for the rest of the day, before we flew home. This was very inexpensive and the lockers were huge.

The hostel had many facilities we did not use, inc. computers, social areas etc. So I am unable to comment on their suitability - but people were always around and about the communual areas.

Overall I was very impressed with the hostel. It was clean, central and had all we needed for our 2 night stay. Would certainly head back anytime!!

Good points + bad points

from A TripAdvisor Member
i had never stayed in a hostel before until this trip. I went with a group of 39 and it was super.

I stayed in a room for 6 people. The way it was layed out was brilll because there was a sink and a mirror with a separate shower room, and then a separate toilet! it worked really well with 6 girls sharing far better than being just 1 whole bathroom.

Breakfast in a moring was simple but nice. A variety of breads + meats + cheeses, and yoghurts and cereal.

The lobby was a great area with plenty of sofas, and i met lots of new people just by sitting there which was great. It is a great area to meet new people.

Some of the evening meals wern't that nice, but some were. Every evening there was a separate choice for vegitarians, so if you are vegi there is not need to worry.

When you arrive in your room there i a bag of linen on your bed that you have to make. I arrived at half 10 after an 18 hour journey and it was the last thing i wanted to do.

To get into the hotel and through doors and into your bedroom you need your key card. This was really good because it was safe. But dont put your heycard in a pocket or bag with your phone because it wipes out your card so it doesnt work which is really bad as i found out!!!!

Overall i would recomend it to anyone it was grest!

Fantastic Hostel

from 1uke
What a great hostel.

Stayed in a 6 bed dorm which contained its own shower and toilet. The room was clean and modern. Lockers were provided in the room but you had to supply your own lock.

The location is good for all parts except for the redlight district which is about a 20 minute walk.

The staff were friendly and helpful.

Ups and downs

from A TripAdvisor Member
The best thing about this hostel is location--Leidesplein, which is very central, easy to get to on trams and from the airport, lots of restaurants and bars around here. The hostel is tucked down a side street--it is a little dark and on the side of the Vondelpark but we never felt unsafe returning, even late at night. The breakfast that is provided is quite good--many different types of breads, cheeses and meat, cereal, yogurt--so do wake up for it! And DO use the reception desk to buy tickets for attractions--the discount is not so huge, but the lines for the Van Gogh museum and Anne Frank house were around the block when we went to both, and we were able to breeze right in since we had prebought.

Our room was quite clean. It slept six people and has a private toilet and shower. The shower was mostly clean except for some hair in the drain (a pet peeve of mine!) I slept well, the beds are comfortable, and there are lockers in the room in which you can store your stuff as long as you bring a lock. Linens are provided, towels are not. There is a restaurant and bar but we did not frequent either.

The one thing that this hostel needs to improve on is its staff. Housekeeping (which was male) barged in, without knocking, to retrieve linens from departed guests--this is a little unnerving for a room filled with six girls! The front desk staff was also kinda rude... They were very unhelpful and could barely give basic recommendations for things to do in the area--as per nightlife, they recommended a touristy American bar to us! When we asked for directions to a location, we also asked for the name of the tram stop, and the woman behind the desk replied "Well, you won't be able to spell it!" (Clearly- as we are not Dutch...)

Other than the staff, though, the Stayokay is a good bet for Amsterdam. At 26 euros a night it's far cheaper than anywhere else in the city and is a great base from which to explore!

Nice place to stay

from NunoM
A very nice place to stay. We've stayed in a room for 6 with private facilities. Everything was clean. The staff was fine and the breakfast was very good. The location is suberb, in quiet park near the center (five minutes walking from Van Gogh museum). If you don't like to walk there are several trams nearby.

Clean and rude

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed in the City Hostel Vondelpark for two days. First the good: it was really clean, each room had a shower and toilet in it, and there was a very friendly guy that worked there that hooked me up with some breakfast when I showed up late. There's also an elevator which is really convenient and no curfew.

Now the bad: I found the staff to be ridiculously rude. When I booked my room, I only booked for one night, so the next morning I went to go book it for another night. They had to put me in another room, but OK, fine. But then they told me that I had to take my bag out of my old room by 10:30, put it in a locker (which I had to pay for) and would beable to get into my new room at 2pm. Basically, unless I stayed at the hostel until 2pm or managing to come back at that time, I would have to pay for a locker all day. The staff were very unhelpful towards me, and they didn't allow me to use the (free) luggage room to put my bag in because "it's reserved for big groups and is currently full." Please, like they couldn't stick one more bag in there? When I asked them exactly that, the woman was just like "Everyone else rents a locker, you're not special." Well, excuse me, I don't see why I should have to pay money to keep my stuff somewhere when I have a room!

Also, the internet they have is very very expensive. It's half as much to use the internet at one of the places near the red light district and free if you stay at the flying pig downtown.

I'm not usually a youth hosteller but....

from LondonGlittergirl
I would never normally stay in a youth hostel but was travelling to Amsterdam with 12 friends and we couldn't get any hotel rooms for such a large group so we booked at this hostel.

It was FANTASTIC -- much nice than may hotels I've stayed in. People were very friendly, it was very clean and the breakfast was great. The location is also superb.

I have already booked to go again next year.
