I was thinking today (and yesterday) how nice it was to have not watched TV for two weeks....tonight I sat and watched way too much TV. It was almost as if I was hypnotized. I finally pulled myself away to check in on some web stuff and to read a bit before bed. Being back at the Spenard Hostel is quite comfortable. It's my third time here during my stay and it feels as much like home as anywhere has during my stay. I get to see some of the same people that work here, and Jim and I have had a...
Anchorage, Alaska, United States jumpintbMatt: After exhausting Juneau of it's vast number of cultural attractions (except the dump - we're saving that for a return visit) we decided that it was time to "jog on". During our lengthy 4 hour travel planning session in Vancouver, Poppy discovered a car hire company that would rent us a car one-way to Anchorage for approximately $900. We decided it best to book at the car 48 hours in advance but unfortunately when we looked again the best deal that we could find was somewhere around the ...

Since this is my first blog, I thought it best to start at home. I think world travelers want to come here. They just have to put with AK's eccentricities. Half the people in the state live within the city limits of Anchorage. In the book "Coming into the Country" John McPhee, wrote something like...Anchorage is not a great town, but it has the best out-of-town any town ever had. It's ten ...
Last September, my passion for volcanoes incited me to visit Katmai in Alaska. In June 1912, a volcano – Mount Novarupta – erupted, generating a huge amount of ash and pumice that filled the Utak valley. The place was called "The Valley of the Ten Thousand Smokes" because of the countless fumaroles discovered by the first explorers.
Visiting Katmai National Park in Alaska is quite an ...

... friends who happen to have rental property that happens to be coming open. They agree to let us rent until closing. A couple of job interviews and more appointments are squeezed into all of the above and things seem to be looking up. The only thing left is to do is to get an anxious female who is pregnant for the first time to quit having mood swings. Yeah. Anyone who ...

highlight of our trip, there many animals here to see in their natural
habitat (not like a zoo) and all the proceeds from the admission ticket
and gift shop purchases go to taking care of them. I even got to feed a
deer. My alaska trip was amazing and I look forward to the day that I
can revisit this beautiful state of wilderness.
... RV park but mostly at government camping sites. Campsites in Canada provide free firewood so Erik got into viking mode, chopping up and building a campfire to keep warm and deter bears. Our current tally of bears seen is between 25 and 30. The closest encounter we had was while walking around Dezadeash Lake Trail at Haines Junction. At the start of the trail was a large yellow sign saying "You are entering bear country", etc and 5 minutes ...

This enables us to meander in and around the floating chunks of ice (the size of cars). Jo Jo and I drift off down our own streets and bring our paddles in to listen to the sounds around us.... an eerie silence and the tinkle of crackling ice and drip drops of water melting from the tips and dropping into the water. the ice chunks are so blue ...
