Smith's Cottage Durban

... in Durban is limited. Despite almost constant rain, I've enjoyed walking around the city a bit and visiting several small museums.

Tomorrow I'm heading up into the northern Drakensberg mountains, where I hope the weather will be good enough to hike and ride horseback over the next couple of days.

... formand findes der ikke noget saadan. Han brugte simpel logik til at bevise dette. Han spurgte "Hvordan siger man hermaphrodit pa pedi? (hvilket er et lokalt stammesprog) Det kan man ikke. Derfor er der ikke ngoet der hedder hermaphrodit!" Han er hoejest sandsynligt den naeste prasident i det her land. Skraemmende!
Nu staar den paa en uges ferie. Vi har koebt en del boeger i dag, og de skal saa laesses imens vi drikker friskpresset juice. Nogen skal jo goere det.

... Just outside East London a great campsite a short walk from the longest most deserted beach I've ever seen.

- Umzumbe: Just around 30km outside Durban and a really cool backpackers around the corner from the beach. The weather here was starting to hot up again now that we'd gotten a bit further north.

Places that were talked up a bit in the books but we didn't think much of were:

- Jeffrey's bay: I'm sure it has great surf but ...

... was really beautiful. Later in the morning a big group of us set off for an 18 km hike, which took all day and had some amazing views- we even saw a few baboons! Sunday we left and drove to Impendle, the rural community where we stayed. We got to the town and found out that we are the first foreigners to ever stay in the town, which was apparent by the number of stares we got. We were paired off and dropped off at our new homes for the next few ...

South Africa is really... white. Durban is dangerous at night and there
is a huge mall. They have blackouts every day for two hours at two in
the afternoon, and even the malls shut down.

... a Lutheran church whose values coincide with those of my own. While I have been hesitant at times to verbally confront those around me due to safety concerns and professional limitations, I feel as though my equal treatment of all races and my receptivity to learning from those different than myself is in some small way helping to raise the collective consciousness. ... By the time we were in the car the first massive drops were falling and the car was being buffeted by the ever strengthening wind. A car guard was helping a surfer get his surfboard into his car to stop him getting blown away with it. By the time we got to the main road towards home the rain was so hard that the visibility was just a few metres ahead with everyone driving at a snails pace, hazard lights ...

... for a meal, walking up Florida Avenue, Morningside's main street, which is lined with very fancy-looking restaurants and bars. Nearly everyone I saw on the street was white, and rich, apart from the few black homeless beggars. There were one or two white street people too, which actually pleased me; at least there appeared to be some sort of equality in the poverty here. The following day I walked into town, not wanting to take a bus as I wouldn't have known where to get off it ...

But trouble seems to follow us and while we were four hours from our destination, well, Kevan has yet again been fortunate enough to write a police statement :) Driving down the main highway, we passed many individuals on the road begging for a lift, both on the side and middle of the pavement.
