First a word on the title...
If any of you have ever spent any time with Erin you'll be aware of her propensity for never hurrying and being a little distracted and vague. I tell you now that Singapore was full of people who walked around as if they were the only people on the earth, that no-one else needed to get anywhere within a time-frame and that if they chose to walk there and so were you then you had better get out of the way. This drove Erin crazy until I reminded her of her own sp...
Luckily I managed to get some broken sleep on the flight from perth to Singapore although we landed at 2am so there wasn't much I could do except find a nice coffee shop in the airport with some comfy seats, put my earplugs in and get some more sleep until public transport wakes up. I got to my hostel (Sleepy Sams) and was a bit disappointed. Firstly the staff didn't seem too friendly and there wasn't much in the way of a communal area and I didn't find any of the guests there too willing to ...
Singapore, Singapore amandaseimsI arrived safely in Singpore after a few delays in the UK due to the high winds. My 1st nights sleep in the hostel was interrupted by a snoring man (one of the other girls in my room went and told him to shut up after about 1/2 an hour wihch was a bonus) and the 6am prayer call for the Mosque down the road - how rude!! But other than that, it's not too bad - I am definitely looking forward to the double bed and private shower luxury of the Bali hotel already though. Went to Sentosa Island tod...
Singapore, Singapore belljoIt's now my 4th day in Singapore and I have a poorly head. Went out last night to a restaurant on the 70th floor of the swiss hotel which is next door to Raffles. I had a really nice meal there and a very blue cocktail which is class, Jo B style!! After that I went to Raffles for the obligatory singapore sling which was very tasty (and at the price of a small meal, it better had of been). Met a guy there who was 1/2 Danish and 1/2 Ozzie and we bonded over being able to drink Asian people unde...
Singapore, Singapore belljoFirst City of the trip! Its a very strange feeling leaving friends and family for a long time, took me some time to get my head around how long i'll be away! Although i've no doubt this trip will literally fly by! We arrived mid morning after a successful flight. Our first challenge however was to locate the MRT train to the city centre. After a while we managed to find it in terminal 3, I was amazed how cheap and efficient it was compared to the UK! We have already travelled around various p...
Singapore, Singapore commandercoolIn hindsight, booking a hostel in the Arab Quarter of Singapore, beside the mighty Sultan Mosque, during the end of Ramadan, may have been a mistake... However, this was not immediately apparent when I rocked up to Sleepy Sam's at 1 am in the wee hours of Wednesday, desperate for a cold shower and a bed. No, it was 4 and a half hours later, when a banshee-esque wail ripped out from the muezzins at 5:30 am to call the faithful to prayer and the sheer proximity of my guest house to the mosque w...
Singapore, Singapore el_condorMe again, Hello. Am now in Singapore and it has rained more than i thought possible with huge thunderstorms! Blooming boiling as well though so you can imagine how good my hair looks!! The rain has not stopped me though, just slowed me down a little in my slippy flip flops. My hostel lives up to it's name and is tucked away in a quiet little sleepy street, though turn the corner at the end of the street and you're in busy Singapore. Went wandering yesterday and discovered a shopping centre th...
Singapore, Singapore emmacarracherSleepy Sam's, a backpackers lodge set in the heart of the city, in a quiet suburb was my digs for my 6 days in Singapore. Whilst it was the third backpackers lodge I had stayed in it was the first where I was in a dorm. In the others I had been a sole occupant in a twin room, and the dorm bit was a little strange, almost like going back to school, and I was naturally concerned with security, safety, and keeping people awake with my snoring and other bodily functions. By the second night I was...
Singapore, Singapore euromaverickSleepy Sams has it's own internet cafe (well two PC's connected to the internet), and better still wireless connectivity for all guests. I hadn't realised how much I had depended on my trusty notebook PC, and it's ability to connect to the internet wirelessly until it broke down. Firstly, it started slowing down then crashing, and finally wouldn't re-boot. At fist I thought it was the heat but then realised it was more serious. This was the first time all trip I hit a mental low - I was in a ...
Singapore, Singapore euromaverickMeeting different people is one of the best aspects of this trip, and apart from Hong Kong where it was difficult, I have met a huge number of people. I have put into practice many of the things I used to teach budding networkers (see BNI - Business Network International), and it has had a profound impact on my trip. In Hong Kong I was about to start playing a networking game where I throw a dice to give me a number ( eg. 3) and then another to give me a colour (eg. blue), then talk to say th...
