Southern patagonia

A dull Place if ever there was.. This is not really a full of "life" kind-a-place. We needed to get from point A to point B and the only way we could get to B was through Rio Gallegos. On the River (a large, wide brown river) rests the ugly little but not happening town of Rio Gallegos. We arrived, checked into our Hostel, went for a 20 minute wander of town and decided we had seen enough,so we went straight back to the Bus station, and prompty booked tickets to our next destination for the v...

Rio Gallegas

Moving on again to Rio Gallegos about four hours down the road. Lots of people have said that this trip is very boring, as far as the views go I agree, but as far as the wildlife goes there are lots to see. Today we have seen over one hundred guanaco, sixty rhea's and a couple of foxes. In addition we have seen lots of geese, we do not know which type but they are obviously in ...

En Route to Bariloche

So we left El Calafate on a 30+ hour bus ride to Bariloche early in the AM. Since the bus didn't leave until 3 AM, I thought it was a good idea to have some more Brazilian caipirinha (national Brazilian cocktails...delicious) with new friends at the hostel. After about the thrid bottle of vodka consumed by these crazy *******s...the one that spoke the best English offered me his sister if I come ...

Am I in Russia?

... there it was cold and drizzeling and everything has a film of dirt around it. I feld like I was in some Northen Soviet town with all the buildings the same drab grey concrete.

The hostel is ok though but very empty and is close to the bus station for tomorrow morning (useful).

Almost there

... then travel 12kms to Argentina customs, by far the best border on this trip. The staff friendly, helpful and efficient while music is playing in the back ground and they all sip their Mate. In less than 20 minutes we were done. The road instantly changing to asphalt, a welcome change after the mess in Chile. The winds continue to get stronger and by the time we reach Rio Grande we both agree to stop for the night.

Passing Rio Gallegos to find some penguins

Rio Gallegos probably didnīt need a night, it is a slow, lazy place which seems to have stopped caring. We stay a quick night in a tight dorm with a Mormon family, the father snores. I bookswap and end up with a Clive Cussler rubbish thriller which the blonde is sure is a Mormon preaching device. We move north to Puerto Madryn to find penguins.

The stop in Rio Gallegos

After enjoying some worldclass trekking, we headed toward Puerto Madryn, the gaterway for Peninsula Valdes, THE place to see argentinian wildlife. The trip was long - it took nearly 24 hours to get from EL Chalten to Puerto Madryn. We stopped in Rio Gallegos, a small town on the east cost. Nothing to see there, really. We moved on immediatelly.

Bus Ramblings, Israeli Adam Sandler

... other than the Lonely Planet bible to read on the long journeys. Puerto Natales has gone to the dogs. The streets were full of dogs and not the usual mangy, skinny, hungry looking street tramps you find in other Latin American countries. These dogs are lovable, attractive and cute, the kind you would turn up with on your mumīs doorstep, tell her it followed you home from school and beg her to let you keep them. They are operating in organized gangs and they seem to ...

Kids and Buses do not mix well

I have successfully made it to Rio Gallegos, pretty much as south as you can go in Argentina whilst staying on the continent (Tierra del Fuego is an island). It was a long, long bus ride to get here though... First off, the bus was 90 minutes late arriving at the Puerto Madryn terminal. Once more my lack of spanish didnt help me when they made announcements over the intercom system. Instead, I decided to be pigheaded about it - I was absolutely certain that the bus hadnt ...
