Oslo to Bergen train

... isn't it? Especially considering a coffee costs 5 dollars and a sandwhich 10 dollars. I think the Norwegians just take advantage of toursists. I plan to take the train trip back and take the Flam train which is supposed to be awesome, so I've been told I must do. They say it's called Norway in a nutshell. However, apparently there was a landslide yesterday so I may have to stay an extra day in Bergen, which is ...

Norway in a Nutshell

... it for a single day. This would shorten their torture a bit. This way, we'll also give us more time in Bergen. During down times, when the kids got a bit antsy, we played Yatzee, watched movies, and Annie even helped Nick put together his new Lego set. It took us a while to get accustomed to the motions of the train. It was fine while we were traveling through a mountain underpass or high above overlooking the fields ...

... two to go!
The ascent from Floyen to Rundemanen was steep and tiring and only made difficult because we were both exhausted. Having also hiked some of these trails the previous year we knew what to expect and had some appreciation of the view we were missing but the time pressing, our soul focus was now to reach the 560m Summit and get another mountain crossed off. There we had another brief food stop before pressing on immediately because ...

... advice and knowledge. Angie's room was the first on the right and she told me she "loved making a mess of it". Meaning, unpacking and having her own space. I felt the same way. My room had a big, comfortable double bed, with more skylights and windows. Terje told me there are 22 skylights which he says he thinks are enough. And he says that with this subtle, dry, humor, acknowledging that it's quite a lot. Nancy says, when you live in a place where you can't be outside for a lot of the ...

Hunger strike

... realize that it would be silly to do that - why not just eat the kidney, and avoid the middleman? I tried booking my Stockholm-Helsinki ferry online, but couldn't figure out how to take care of my railpass discount so need to find a way to call directly, or use a travel agent. Found a nice walking area along Standgaten, but it was quiet at this time of morning. Then it started to pour - even with an umbrella, the ...

... recuperation. In the evening, we went and listened to a local choir perform a summer solstice concert at Domkirken (another medieval church). Day 2: Today our big discovery was that busses are more difficult than trains. However, even after waiting for 20 minutes in the wrong spot, we still managed to find the bus that took us to the Fantoft Stave Church (see photo). The church was ...

... was getting a ticket and moved out of view of the driver and most of my fellow passengers. As i was counting down the number of stops to safety the Swedish bloke from earlier sauntered down the train to tell me that tram fares were very expensive in Sweden and i should buy myself a day card that will make it much better value. Excellent advise for an obvious out of towner like myself but unfortunately his jovial and rather loud manner was not helping my cause of laying low and not ...

... no. so i got a room in the dorm part which turned out to be a shared dorm with men and women! haha. but then met them a few minutes later and we walked about town and found a place to have a drink....the Tiki Bar. those two were quite funny and enjoyed my time with them. so off to bed and told them that i was going to do my own thing in the morning and probably sleep in as i was a bit tired, but would probably seem them in town but for sure on the train to Oslo.

Saturday 16 June 2007 - Bergen, here we come!

... The Floibana is a funicular cable car going on rail tracks at a gradient of 15 to 26 degrees. That allows quite an impressive view. And the view from the top is simply beautiful: Norway means hiking (at least to me), so I could not miss the chance to hike all the way down. It was a sole venture as the other three prefer comfort - the Thai way - and got down with the funicular ...

The West Coast: Heck Yes for Bergen!!

... is for me, but I appreciate the fact that I can go away for the weekend and truly enjoy myself without worrying about my never-ending pile of homework, work schedules, social obligations, etc. I feel like Norway has taught me to live in the moment and enjoy these new experiences, because I know I won't have these opportunities again. I'm looking forward to coming home and getting back to my regularly scheduled program called life, but every day I thank God for bringing me here. So ...
