Jakarta - busy busy busy...

After a ferry and a 2 and a half hour flight that was with a short stop in Medan we arrived in Jakarta and took a bus from the airport to Gambir station, from there a short taxi ride to our digs Six Degrees, where we are in a 4 pod mixed dorm, clean room and good facilities. Our journey into Jakarta took longer than the flight, the traffic is …

... about for a bit until someone asked for our tickets and we were shown our allocated beds, they are just rows of raised platforms with a mattress

The place is alive with cock roaches, rats or mice, they scuttle among the beds, the bugs are running everywhere, over beds, over people, but it’s no worse than some of the hostels we have been in

I went up to the pointy end, there seemed to be a bit of action going on, they were loading cargo, it looked a bit chaotic to ...

After checking in and realising I still had NO local cash, I was informed that the only store in the resort takes only cash- so no cigarettes, no power convertor, no food ( unless room service) until I get back to the airport. This was not a great mood improver. However; note to all. It turns out, Indonesia uses the same power plugs as Europe.

inspiration from the people of this city. I digress….

My main objectives were to paraglide in Himachel Pradesh in the area of Rajasthan and sample some of the culture on the way. An overnight coach journey for 12 hours and a two hour cab ride straight afterwards landed me in the Tibetan Colony of Bir. An area of land purchased
and given to Tibetans, after they were expunged from China,

Six Degrees is an oasis in a busy city, the owners run the hostel and certainly know what they are doing, friendly staff and a very clean building.
The rooms vary from podstyle 4 bed dorms, 8 bed dorms and some doubles, all with shared bathrooms which are spotless and always at least one available. Rooms have aircon and there is a kitchen on 3rd floor for guests to use. Lovely roofgarden and downstairs you have 2 internet facilities, free wifi throughout the building. There is a giant cinema screen and a big tv for dvd,s and normal use. A breakfast of fresh fruit, juice and toast is part of. The package and snacks during the day are available, also free water and 24/7 coffee and tea.
All in all a great budget hostel well worth the money.

THE Place to stay in Jakarta

I can't say enough about the owners of this place. Super friendly people with an awesome cat named Nemo. Everything you've read in the positive comments is 100% correct. Clean, fun, comfortable, friendly, relaxed. I haven't stayed at a lot of hostels in Asia, but I have to believe people when they say this one is the best. From my limited experience (5-6 hostels) I can promise you it's the best Internet connection I've ever had!

Eat at the place directly across the street. Excellent food.

You know you've got a great hostel when IT is the destination itself. I'd come back just to stay here and see everyone again! :-)

Very clean rooms for a good price. Friendly staff and nothing to complain. We would have stayed longer than that one night, but it was full for the second night...
