Still loving Shenzhen

A travel blog entry by mbryred

So, with a Friday morning plan of getting over to Shenzhen in time to get our rooms at the LOFT Youth Hostel, we actually were out the door somewhat before the required time. The hotel got us a taxi and we rode about 10 minutes to the Jiuzhou Port to catch a ferry over to Shenzhen, for about 100 RMB each. Ruth & I loved it, but the choppy …

It is finished!

Despite the many pluses (friends and finances) this year at ES was one of my hardest, mentally and emotionally. It's taken it's toll on me.... Granted, how can I compare this cake walk to say a year policing an arctic village, two weeks on (w/o Ruth & family), two weeks off, with all it's great difficulties? In the arctic, I had a great sense …

Old Friends and New Friends

Okay, so maybe I favor Shenzhen too much. But it's a good city, and I'm comfortable there! On the weekend of May 4th-6th, after my failed walk, I made my way to Shenzhen. A new/old (we only met once/but it was back in January) friend of mine from Beijing was in town to do some passport stuff in Hong Kong, as well as marry his long time girlfriend …

Chillin' in

Shēnzhn 深圳 weather in December is divine! Judging by ever-present aircon units hanging all all the buildings, we know spring-like weather here is not always the case. And it much cheaper to live in Shenzhen than in Hong Kong. We decided to wait here for three days or so for a …

Train K588 8PM to 8AM – 36 hours. (467RMB $74)

Our 90 day limit per visit in China was approaching. We needed to exit China by December 13th. We chose Hong Kong as our exit/reentry point and would ride the metro over the border. We were in Chengdu, 1464 miles …

A nice queen sized bed, with Chinese hard mattress (thus 4, not 5 star), 3rd floor view of our favorite little eatery, under the large tree. Sadly, I didn't download the photos from Ruth's camera. Maybe she'll sign in and add them.

    Arty Stay

The location is brilliant, in perhaps the most beautiful neighbourhood in Shenzhen, with gorgeous trees and arty studios, galleries and shops nearby. There's a great supermarket across the street with a cheap eatery on top; check out the earthy restaurant two entrances behind it (graffiti wall, clay pots on roof).

Service was friendly, security good, and the hostel itself has an arty/designer feel. Sitting on the porch having morning coffee (nice) and watching the passing traffic was lovely. Bedrooms and bathrooms a bit spartan but OK. Metro stop a bit of a walk (8-10 min?) but doable with backpack.
