Venturing West

Plastic bags, the bane of dorm goers the world over. The Serpents hostel had so far won me over but stumbled badly on the final hurdle on checkout on failing to return my $20 key deposit due to checking out before the reception opened despite the guy telling me this standing behind the reception desk at the time. You would think they would have twig on to telling me when I ordered a wakeup call last night (still need a new alarm). Still having him wakeup everyone else in the dorm before reach...

The Great Barrier Reef Tour

>>>The following is copied from an entry in my paper journal on the night of Thursday, June 9 Australian time. >>>Today was a day of vivid colors. We knew that we had signed up for a free tour through our volunteer group, but not until yesterday did we know that it was actually a tour of the Great Barrier Reef. 7:15 am found us waiting in the multi-colored painted hostel lounge for a van to take us to the tour office. Ten minutes later found me staring out the window of the ...

Cairns

Cairns Part One

We ended up getting the bus straight from airlie to cairns because the weather wasn't that great (apparently it is approaching wet season, so laugh whilst you can!), so we thought there was no point going to magnetic island if it was going to rain. The journey took all day, and I was climbing up walls by the end of it. We checked into our hostel, Serpents, as recommended by Nikki Fox! Its pretty cool, dirt cheap and some nnice people. We didn't hang around for long that night as we went out f...

Cairns - The East Coast

Finally back on the road again to explore the long awaited for East Coast. Amazing to wake in Cairns and have warm sunshine again and be able to wear and shorts and string vests! Cairns is a great spot - really lively with a great night life and lots to do. In hind sight it would have been a good spot to stay in for a few days and do day trips to Cape Trib, Tully etc but instead we hired a car and headed up to Cape Trib ourselves for a couple of nights. But not before we spun around Cairns fo...

Cairns

We stayed 3 nights in Cairns but didn't do an awful lot apart from book most of the rest of our activities in Australia. Cairns just seemed full of boozy teenage tourists. We went out the first night and ended up in a club called the Woolshed which Nick kept accidentally calling the Woolpack. For those Manchester Uni graduates/students out there it was like Robinskis, and I'm too old for that! We did get chatting to a couple of older guys from Papua New Guinea, they were something to do with ...

Cairns Part 1

On the 19th March we all flew up to Cairns. We stayed in a hostel called The Serpent which was pretty cool but a bit far out of town. We spent our first day in Cairns organizing what we would do for the next two weeks. As the weather forecast was not good for the next few days we decided to re-jig our itinerary a bit and head straight down to the Whitsundays Islands and then go diving in the second week. We got everything booked with a very laid back lady from Cairns who said "Too Easy", afte...

Gudday from Oz !!! ( Cairns - North East Coast )

Arrived in Cairns on 7th March. had a good flight from Auckland. On a different time zone again, thi is getting confusing!! Am now 10 hours ahead ok the UK I think. Booked into this hostel on recommendation from one of the lads I met in NZ. A good move as the place, is modern, clean and very reasonably priced !!! As I arrive late afternoon I resolve I am going to take things easy today. Bar has jugs of lager for $7 like the last place I stayed in Auckland, so cant be bad. Had the todays speci...

Hello Cairns!

Hello from lovely Cairns! This morning, I woke up at 5:00 am- our flight was at 7 so we were getting picked up at 5:30. The ride to the airport was uneventful and luckily the lines weren't as horrendously long as when we were off to Fiji. We boarded the plane and were off to steamy Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef! We landed and were greeted with very warm air. Landing in Cairns was absolutely amazing; we got to see the reef from the sky and the huge mountain ranges that surround the city. E...
