good hotel, close to diving school

nice hotel, clean and well maintained. Across the road from the diving school and close to the wharf. A restaurant either side. The Scuba Junkie cafe serves good meals. A reasonable breakfast is included.
Overcharged for bus fare to Lahad Datu though - more than 50%. That was a shock. Don't be lazy - walk to the bus station and buy bus tickets yourself.

Borneo had been somewhere that we had really been looking forward to going to from very early on in the trip. It was a short plane ride into Tawau on the North East coast of the Sabah province and north of there, Semporna, the jumping off spot for the diving meccas of Mabul, Timba Timba and the famous Sipadan, widely recognised as one of the world' …

Again the bus to Semporna was really very comfortable and we arrived in Semporna feeling refreshed and excited to explore a different side of Borneo, the water side. Semporna is the mainland gateway to the Semporna archiplelago. Apparently every toutrist gives the same answer when asked why they have come to Semporna; Diving! We were a little …

Mabul Island, off of the coast of Semporna, is a major attraction for divers who are looking for a chance to get to the world famous dive spot of Sipidan. Not being a diver, I have learned that where there is good diving, there is often good snorkelling. An hour boat ride out from Semporna, the island is home to 2000 "sea gypsies" who are living …

... company that could get us permits. Sadly as we were only there for 2 days and applied a week or so in advance we were unsuccessful. Luckily Natalie had booked with Billabong and they got her a permit and also managed to organize one for Bryce and Shannon, so we felt less guilty about booking them a dud trip. Our resort had a beach bar which was a good spot to catch up in the evenings with Natalie and Bryce and Shannon and ...
