... with annual rains regularly exposing big dinosaur fossils, some of them 180 million years old. Set among multicoloured rock layers, formed from movements along the tectonic plate here, many of the strange structures have been named - the Worm, the Mushroom, the Submarine, the Sphinx, the Bowling Alley etc. Driving through the area was a great experience and a great day out. Great empanadas at the cafe there too!!!!

San Juan, Argentina rbuil... park also known for its wierd-shaped landforms and for a collection of strange round rocks, it is also the place where the skeletons of the oldest known dinosaurs have been found (around 230 million years old). So from the past to the present. We are now moving no further north to Salta, another 20 hour bus journey which starts at 3am!!!! These are the kinda times that travelling doesn´t seem so appealing!!!
San Agustin, Argentina dagstarWell here I am, in the middle of another exciting adventure! I spent another lovely day in sunny San Juan. The reason for me choosing a stop over in this particular location was the Museum of Natural Sciences (or more accurately El Museo de Ciences Naturales) which had not only a complete replica of a Triassic dinosaur, it has a preparation lab on site. Here you see the process of recovering fossilized bone from beginning to end. It started by ...
San Juan, Argentina rebecca.roseI spent one night in San Juan, on my way to Valle de la Luna. There is not really much to do there. The wierdest part is that it is a reasonably big city, but I could not find a resturant there. I walked around all of down-town and a wide area around the hostel, and all I found was about five cafes, and three little shops where you could order a lomito.
San Juan, Argentina bgibson... station across the road; surely they would know of a hotel. The pump attendants indicated that there was a large one about two kilometres up the road. I thanked them and rode off; as I did so a man came running from the direction of the hotel in signalled for me to stop. My natural instinct was to ride on away from this apparent drunk, but he shouted something about a hotel, so I stopped. It turned out that he was the person I had spoken to on the intercom and that he had rooms ...
San Juan, Argentina pauljlee... of insects that I had been sharing my be with I think I would have been up a good few hours earlier - yuk...(some of them were squashed!) glad to be checking out of there today. Our tour bus arrived - unfortunately our new friend Margeret couldnt make the tour (she was about 70, German and thought a lot of things were "strange"!) We got to the park where we weregive an english pamphlet explaining a little about the park (make the most of the ...
Valle de La Luna, Argentina matnkat... time around. I spent a few days relaxing at the various cafes and convincing less then thrilled cafe patrons that we should watch 4 hours of American Football as I continued to wait for the New England Patriots imminent collapse. I gave the waitress a ten peso tip for her troubles and she gave me a hug. High rolling with the ten peso tips i guess. After a few days of soaking in the city I went to a great wine museum/vineyard that included an oak barrel that held a ...
San Juan, Argentina itsbob21Day 73: October 26, 2007 Teaching in San Juan I got up at 7:00 and had breakfast, letting Elena sleep in. I took a cab out to the university and told Mirta that I needed a computer to print out the exam and lab exercise. By now, I knew this would send her into a tizzy, which it did until she realized she had to be elsewhere so I could use her computer. I sat down. My work from the night before was successful; everything worked and I was able to ...
San Juan, Argentina magellanic... Argentines haven't heard about the Río Iruya canyon formation since 1898. It's a fun story to tell. We finished a little after 6:00. Silvia dropped me off at the internet place. I wrote some emails and uploaded a blog entry before returning to the hotel. It was hard to believe that Elena was the same kid who looked so miserable 24 hours earlier. She was watching a movie. When it was over, we walked several blocks to the ...
