Beautiful Beaches

Today we had a bus driver that reminded us of Otto from the Simpsons. His name was Rob and he was from the South Island, brought up on a farm and very eccentric. We drove up North and stopped off at a forest, where Rob passionately explained things about the huge Kauri trees, the problem of possums and how he loves to hunt them. We then stopped off at a beach. Rob told us that there was a sign saying 'do not feed the fish' but he was going to take us there to do exactly just that. Before we h...

Day 54 - Beach Bum

19.38 - For my last full day in Paihia, it has been pretty **** really. Same as every other day, get up, have a shower, eat breakfast, then go into town to check my e-mails. Again, I had nothing in my inbox so it didn't take very long for me to check them. If the writing here is illegible it's because I am writing in the dark at the Pipi Patch bar! I have got 2 pints with my collection of 2 for 1 vouchers and I think it would be rude not to use them up! Other than going to the beach today, I ...

Still here...

So, jetzt muessen wir mal wieder was schreiben...

PAIHIA, Northland, Feb. 13 to 17 -- I'm as far North as I can be, which on the opposite Hemisphere is the same as going as far South as I can. Those Hemispheres will trip you up every time. For my last adventure, I've come to Paihia, up in Northland at the lovely Bay of Islands. Paihia is about 3 1/2 hours north of Auckland and is full of history. Captain Cook landed here in 1769 on his first trip. This is where the country was created in 1840 with the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. Also,...

Trying to find a job...

Ive now been in Paihia a few days. Really nice little beach resort. Weather is definately getting better. Stayed in a few different hostals - Saltwater Lodge, Bay Adventurer. Then got a cleaning job at Centabay Lodge!!! Great, just what ive always aimed for - to be a cleaner!!! Ive been on loads of huge walks. Went to Hararu falls, took about 5 hours in total. Walked through the wierdest place. It was a boardwalk through loads of trees living in mud. The place was covered in little mud crabs....

Bay of Islands

Mon 9 Feb - Auckland to Paihia (Bay of Islands) Geez that was only today!! It feels like I've been here for longer. Anyway it was an early start - though the bus was half hour late. Along the way stopped at a couple of small towns more for necessity than for sight seeing. Made it to Pahia by 12.30pm. Drove through town past the Waitangi treaty site which was where a treaty was signed between the Maori people and the British government in February 1840. Headed around the golf course to a looko...

North of the North

The Lord of the Forest
