... An uneventful night of wondering around Airlie Beach but it is one of the nicest towns we have been to so far. There are nice bars, restaurants, a few marinas and a great swimming area off the beach. 6th April - Packed up our stuff and walked down to the bus station. It was boiling hot even at half 8 so the 15 minute walk was a struggle loaded up with all of our stuff. Now we have a 10 hour coach journey up to Cairns to look forward ...

An early start to catch our overnight sailing boat to the Whitsundays! We were at Abell Point Marina for 8am and on our way out of the marina on our boat, Iceberg, tat 8.30am. Once on board, all sixty of us (yes, sixty!) met our boat crew, Skipper David (legend) and Boat Handyman Ben, and set off on a leisurely ninety minute journey to South Molle Island, where we would be based for the next two nights. Oh David, you have such a way with words, old ...

... sleep to be had. As we had suspected, we were at the upper end of the age-range, but there were a few people older than us and most people were in their early to mid twenties.

The boat itself is an ex-race boat that cost some $18 million to build back in 1989, and is one of the largest maxis ever built. It is 25m long and has a mast just taller than 36m, which is the biggest in the Whitsundays. After a few years racing around the world, she is enjoying ...

Whitsundays Day 1

... and were rewarded with coffee and cookies back on the boat. I got to chatting with one of our guides and learned she was Canadian and had come to Australia to teach but then meet her boyfriend in the Whitsundays and was now working with him on the boat. I also learned that they had both had two hours of sleep the previous night as they were out late partying. I was glad I learned that after I survived snorkelling as they were the ones that would have had ...
