Great African Trek Week 7

Leaving the Masai Mara early on Tuesday morning we drove to the town of Kisumu arriving late in the day. Kisumu town is on the banks of Lake Victoria and just a short distance from the Kenya Uganda border. That night we stayed at probably the worst campsite we've encountered so far in Africa. It was absolutely filthy and the bathrooms were overrun with Mosquitoes. In fact I can't actually think of any redeeming features. We happily left there early the next morning and drove to the Ugandan bo...

Hello Again!

Just a very quick one to update you all.

My weekend in Queen Elizabeth national park was amazing. I saw 11 lions, no leopard sighting, however there was one just 200 meters away from where I was nicely tucked up in bed on my first night! I then went on a slightly hectic journey across Uganda to see as much as possible before I leave. First stop Jinja, then Mbale, then onto Kumi and Soroti to see Emma's family back out in the village and then back to Mbale..on to Si...

Day Forty Eight - Kampala

Early start this morning, breakfast at 6am to leave for 7am. Luckily it only rained a little during the night and it was dry this morning so putting tents down wasn't too traumatic. A lot of the group were late in getting tents down, I hope this is not a trend for the future. After breakfast, we packed up and got in the truck and set off for Kampala. Dan and I put a bet on what time we would arrive in Kampala - I bet before 3:30pm and he bet it would be after - the stake is whoever loses...

Overlanders

We had met a group of overlanders travelling together whilst we were in Kampala. One German, one Mexican and two Canadians, strange but true. The Mexican was travelling on a motor bike, the German was alone in the most technologically advanced Toyota Landcruiser that he could buy fully kitted with all the bells and whistles even had a Paraglider packed within. I joke not!! At one stage he needed to drill a hole and delved deep within the various storage racks within and produced no other than...

Day 222 - Uganda, Kampala - PROBLEM!

Alarm at 5.30. Beautiful morning in forest surrounds. Lay up on beach with Sarah to border. Very bumpy road... sealed but worse than dirt, like people had been driving on it before tar set creating big waves.

Approaching border received text from parents saying flat was a bit of a tip, the tenants having not done anything they promised like getting in professional cleaner, steam cleaning carpets.... getting all their **** out of the flat by the 15th.... especially as it was now the 18...

Truck Life

The last two weeks have been our first of nine on the Dragoman trip from Nairobi through to Cape Town. Our truck (Oscar) seats 22 and we’re almost full. The group has a mix of nationalities, mostly English and Aussies. Age ranges from late twenties to late sixties, but most are our age. It’s definitely the nearest we’ve been to appearing on Big Brother with mostly everyone getting on really well but some tensions growing as the weeks went on. A sp...

Western Uganda Safari

... They are wonderful singers and dancers. Here you can see how sponsoring is a great asset. There is a small community here, they have small craft shops run by the village people and each one aids a different charity. It is wonderful to see how much they care and want to help each other. As we left this rain forest area it lived up to its name and the heavens opened. The roads were rivers and trees fell, the men had to get out to move a tree from across the road. I ...

School Daze

... recognized my misconceptions about the Ugandan classroom. Mind you this was only my first school and many classrooms I will visit, so I will hold all judgments till the end of my trip.

Similar to how I recall instruction from OISE, the class was filled with questions and answers. Tom would ask a question, and repeat it several times; each time he asked, a few more hands would go up. He would move around the class and then ask a student by name for a response. BY NAME! I ...

... few hours and the nature was lovely in the area - saw some monkeys and loads of birds but have no idea what they were! The guide did tell me but on the fourth attempt of trying to understand his accent I just nodded and agreed. The guide got talking to me about what I was doing here and now wants me to help him found a nursery-school in Jinja! I told him I'd send him some info about the UVDA if he liked and he could submit a ...

... wildlife. I'm sitting their eating and all the animals thought it was their lunch as well. I saw baboons, warthogs, antelopes. It was so cool. Some of the baboons kept climbing on the roof. So I finally saw animals in Kenya...no lions or tigers though. At five o'clock I boarded a plane and flew to Entebbe, Uganda to meet one of my old participants from my dissertation. She's in Uganda with the peace corp. Autumn and her friend Rochelle met me at the airport ...
