Sydney
Sep 16, 2006

Sydney I AM DOWN UNDER!!!

The Chattering Crowd
Jan 28, 2008 (57 photos)

Sleeping well on an overnight bus is always a little hit and miss. Thankfully, the bus to Canberra was a calm and peaceful journey, with only a break in Albury to stir the travelers from their slumber. We roll into Canberra at 7:15 and I head off in search of lodgings. There is a large new YHA suitably placed so I dump the bag and head over the ...

back in sydney
Apr 27, 2007

I came back into Sydney and switched to a different Hostel as the xBase Backpackers was very loud and had some serious amateur drunks. I wandered about the city, but nothing too exciting. The hostel i stayed in was the Railway Square YHA. My room was a train car converted to a dorm-style room. The hostel was a big improvement over the xBase, nic...

Off the rails, then over and out
Sep 30, 2005 (6 photos)

Our normal backpackers haunt was fully booked due the Aussie long weekend, so we booked into the nearest alternative an old train depot. So we are staying inside an old rail boxcar for the night which makes a change from your bog standard dorm, Railway square YHA if you are interested. After another overnight bus journey and lack of sleep we wer...

(Photos to follow... and we've got some cracking ones!) Welcome to Sydney!! For those of you who have already been "you're right its lovely" and for those of you who haven't "you really must!!". Its a lovely place and we've had a great few days pottering around, especially after 3 days in the outback. The flight here from Alice Springs was prett...

Back to Sydney
Jan 19, 2007

We flew back to Sydney today. Not a good flight, I think the Virgin pilot wanted to prove he could land as fast as possible - or perhaps it's just one of those airports. Anyway I for one am glad to get here. Byron Bay was not my kind of town. I'm probably getting old or just not an old hippy!! We are staying at the Railway Square YHA which I lov...

On the Harbour

Another Virgin Blue flight (this time for $29 plus taxes) and we arrived at Sydney. Travelling here is like travelling in Canada. Long distances, lots to see! Not enough time, so we have to fly. Sydney (pronounced "Seedney" by locals) has a population of three million and is Australia's Toronto (i.e., largest and most cosmopolitan city). We are ...

Arriving Down under
Dec 23, 2006 (11 photos)

Leaving my Singapore hostel at 5.45am I caught the MRT to Changi Airport, voted the best in the World and headed for check-in. Standing in the queue I noticed that my flight had already been delayed 2 hours, great thats 2 hours in bed I'll never get back. Mulling around the airport for a few hours it is indeed a very nice airport, worthy of the ...

Lucky Sydney

My flight to Australia was ok, but Qantas really weren't that great.... only one (kids) film which was played on a big screen. What happened to all the in-flight entertainment that LAN offered? Still, it was much better than American Airlines so mustn't grumble too much! The customs people let me in with all my gear and no difficult questions li...

Entry 3 of a trip titled: Down Under, but not Down and Out

I am traveling with my good friends Alex and Jessica to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji over the next two months. There we will battle kangaroos and hang out with koalas. The first place we will go to is Sydney, Australia take part in traditional Australian activities, such as drinking, fishing, hiking, penguin watching and drinking. Then we will travel to Melbourne for two days and then we are off to New Zealand to save the little island of Matuihe. We will be on Matuihe for two weeks where we will plant trees and clear out farming land for the people of New Zealand to enjoy. We will then trek around the rest of New Zealand for the next two weeks. Finally we will travel to Fiji for six days of relaxation. Thanks for visiting.

Qantus Confusion
Jul 17, 2008

Possibly the best and worst thing about travel is that anything can happen for better or for worse. We were delayed in LA due to an engineers strike, but the airline gave us a free room and free dinner and breakfast at the Hilton. So we lost a day in Sydney, but we were able to get a good nights rest before our 13+ hour flight. LA was great we ...

Exploring Sydney...
Nov 1, 2005

Well, we got in to Australia without problems. Customs was easier then they make it out to be. I had no problems bringing the Chinese tea Kainan's mom gave me for my mom into the country. They looked at it and even joked with us says "It says its made in Milwakee" which I was confused for a sec since I hadn't heard many jokes in Asia. In any cas...
