You know funnily enough I have been an Australian all my life, I pride myself on being an Aussie and can say that I have seen more of our beautiful land than most.
Well I was wrong!
Now that I have ridden through this part of the country it is only now that I can really give it the appreciation that it deserves.
You know that the trip …

Mining, but not as we know it

In Coober Pedy, the primary industry is 'noodling' for opals. These rather pretty little stones are quarried by hand from veins in the rock, cut and polished, and then treated with a reverance approaching diamonds, and used as jewellry. With such importance set on the profit from these stones, every single store owner was giving us the hard sell, …

Living like moles

As a lucky coincidence one (if not the) largest opal mines is stuck in the middle of the desert where the only way to escape the intense heat is to hide underground where it is a constant 26 degrees year round. It was in the mid to high 40's when we were there so we could only do things till about 11am then we had to retreat underground or into …

Coober Pedy, Australia

The Greyhound Pioneer bus departed Adelaide and travelled through the outback at night. As I gazed out the window and looked up at the millions of stars scattered across the sky - I felt really excited about the next stop on my journey around Australia. I was headed for Australia's opal capital, a unique town (certainly for me), a place where the …

This is a funny little town. 80% of the locals live underground in dugouts. We stayed in Radekas underground hostel. It was really strange sleeping underground, it felt a bit like Dr. Evils underground layer. Also, I have been camping quite a bit and used to getting up a 7am and when you are underground you have no idea what time of the day it is. …

I feel like an animal about to go into hibernation

Living in an underground cave is pretty cool, if only I could stop myself from storing food in my cheeks ready for the winter- it pays to be prepared!

The hostel is nice enough, but the old fella working the reception turns into a right knob when you ask him any question (only answer: okay, just go somewhere else). Okay for 1 night.
