Clean and comfortable. Must have caught the owner on a 'non-stimulant' day as trying to get him to comprehend I was wanting to check in was an interesting exercise!

      A Unique Experience

There are a number of hotels in Coober Pedy that have been dug out so that you live underground. The Radeka is a great example. We had a twin room that was 6.5m underground. When we arrived Coober Pedy was in flood (this only happens once a decade) and we had to drive through 1 metre of water to reach the hotel. Fortunately it was completely dry. The Radeka is a back packers with shared rooms and dorms. It is clean, has plenty of showers and a bar. It is in the middle of town so there are plenty of places to eat and drink nearby.

Being underground there was little air movement but you quickly got used to it. It was a unique experience and we loved it.

Room Tip: Choose and underground room to get the true experience.

Living in an underground cave is pretty cool, if only I could stop myself from storing food in my cheeks ready for the winter- it pays to be prepared!

The hostel is nice enough, but the old fella working the reception turns into a right knob when you ask him any question (only answer: okay, just go somewhere else). Okay for 1 night.

This morning we relegated all of our summer clothes to the bottom of the suitcase, and put on winter gear – as quickly as that. Armed with a hot take-away coffee, we set sail again down past the beautiful rocky ranges of Central Australia, through the mulga until we hit the arid flat desert plains where even saltbush seems to struggle. We …

Boy o boy. What a big day in the car!!! We left our camp site this morning at 8:00am. We passed through Point Augusta; not much to report. We headed toward Woomera where we visited the test range. The boys loved seeing the old missiles, bombs etc... Back in the car and we drove through Glendambo; last fuel stop before Coober Pedy. We decided to …

We left Adelaide and took the highway to Port Augusta. It was raining but not too heavily at this stage. Our first stop was Port Pirie, a steel making city that thrived during one of the earlier mining booms. It is still a major port and has a lot of industry but I think that it is past its peak. We has coffee at the Coles Express which was …
