MACHU PICCHU How does Machu Picchu compare to other wonders of the world we've been fortunate enough to experience? It along with Cuzco truly were remarkable places. The natural setting of MP gives it most of its splendor...perched high up in the middle of a remote cloud forest in between two peaks and at the crossroads between the Peruvian Amazon and the Andes. We don´t know if we could compare Angkor Wat in Cambodia to Machu Picchu. Angkor scores big in terms of its architecture, vastness a...
Machu Picchu, Peru ashifreeshmaUp with the sun, no, correction, up before the sun. Taxi picked us up and we got to the airport in good time. Quick checkin, quick stop at snack shop and the up up and away. Arrived in Cusco after just 55 mins flight, bit colder than Lima. Again confused packing, prepared for warm weather, not the ideal situation but we´ll manage. There´s loads of lama wool stuff to buy here :) Room at hostel is nice although we wont spend much time in it, they told us we´ll be picked up tomorrow to join with...
Cusco, Peru cammise You read it about it, saw it in postcards, but seeing it is like entering another world. Even with its high expectations as South America´s top attraction, I have yet to meet any one who was disappointed!
After my first night´s stay in the dorm, our room got up at 430am, and arrived at bus station at 520, only to find another 200 people in front of us. Why? The backdrop of any Machu Picchu postcard is the Huayna (Wayna) Picchu. Only 400 people are allowed to climb it per day, so we are...

... did manage to get some pictures taken – and some of me. When I waited to make a pose in one of the impressive doorways, this short local girl (they are all short) came up and asked to pose next to me – the giant. It was kind of funny to be the attraction for a change. Thereafter, Carlos drove us to the local market, which was very interesting. Every little niche of the market had their own speciality: fish, poultry, meat, flowers, vegetables, medicinal plants etc ...
Cusco, Peru chrisser71... the photo opportunities. So, with thé ´practice climb´done, the group meeting out of the way, the Kiwis have challenged us to a Pub Trivia night contest at the local Brit expat bar. Should be fun, though the cervezas will not help with the hydration and acclimatization!
So far we have strayed from trouble, but the bars here stay open until 5am ...
... setting off on our second trek of the day. We wandered around the town of Ollantaytambo where there a few shops selling Peruvian goods, mostly hats, blankets and bags, I stocked up on coca sweets in preparation for the increasing altitude we would face over the coming days and set off with Dee for a cup of real coffee, we knew this would be our last chance for a few days.
Once our free time was over and just after we jumped back on the bus and headed for the start of ...
... of around 10 feet, a little bit larger than the California Condor. It is not as endangered as the California Condor, but is still is considered threatened. A couple of interesting tidbits about the Andean Condor: it is a very faithful bird, generally staying with the same mate for life (which can be up to 85 years). Additionally, when a bird gets to the end of its life, either due to age or illness, it will ...

I am woken up at 3:00 am somewhere in the suburbs of Cusco. It's cold and dark, and it's pouring with rain. Miguel, my Peruvian guide says we have to switch buses because the one we're travelling on is too big to enter the city. I try to get back to sleep in a hotel but I can't so I wait till 5am and go downstairs to fetch something to eat. The cooks are a bit startled to see a ...
Cusco, Peru translucent... got word from Henry that the Argentinean and Brazilian girls were struggling and had fallen ill because of the altitude. They were on rented horses on their way to the campsite.
Fortunately everyone did eventually arrive. The porters erected the tents in the rain while we waited under the sheltered tent where we had our dinner and breakfast the following morning. We crept into our tents once they were ready. The porters were so kind ...
