A fortnight in old Tsing Tao!

So I got a very nice job in Qingdao. I applied and interviewed back in
March, and was awarded a nice position at a 2nd tier
international school. I also met my girlfriend that same month.

So in mid-June, once my second semester in Shanghai is complete, I fly down to Qingdao (QD as the Chinese call it) and hang my hat at the …

Its Always Beer O'Clock In Qingdao

The popular seaside city of Qingdao comes self billed as "Chinese Switzerland", I can't really understand it myself. Firstly there's the fact that its not that iconic mountainous countryside lined with wooden chalets filled cuckoo clocks and Toblerone that you would expect of anywhere reminiscent of Switzerland but then there's also the fact the …

A European Chinese

The first thought, when arriving in Qingdao, is that the city is very European. With its 19th century German architecture, its churches, mansions and narrow decaying alleys, the coastal city has European DNA. No doubt about that. Even the locally-brewed and worldwide popular beer Tsingtao tastes like a German beer (the brewery was actually founded …

On Monday, our last full day in Qingdao, we took a side trip to Lao Shan, which is a beach-side mountain about an hour outside the city. Following the advice of the Lonely Planet and the staff at our hostel, we took a city bus to the mountain.

When we arrived at the bus stop, we realized that all of the tourists and many of the locals in …

Hey-o!

Here is some commentary to compliment those lovely photographs.

Last weekend a few friends and I made out way out the coast, finally! It was really something to visit with an old friend, but in a new place! China's pacific is the same as California's pacific, but the feel is definitely different. The water was surprisingly …

One of the best youth hostels in China that I've been to.

The Kaiyue is a cool old youth hostel right there in historic Old City (the German concession), where one can relax after a day of traveling the city, have an excellent Western or Chinese meal in the VERY COOL lounge area. Even after I left the hostel I returned to eat at the lounge every other day. The linens and bathrooms are clean, the building is interesting especially the old skylight in the 4th floor library. Staff is quite helpful with travel plans. They want to be the best hostel and it shows!
