      Excellent hostel

This is a wonderful place to stay. The location is brilliant and the guys who run it are extremely nice. We had a twin room, pretty but fairly basic (3 beds, hooks to hang things) but we did have a bedside lamp which was nice and is something you don't always get in hostels. The thing about this hostel is that the common areas are so nice and the atmosphere so welcoming that you really only go to your room to sleep in your very comfortable bed. There is a lounge/dining/kitchen area and verandah, all with ocean views and a small but very pretty garden where you can also watch the ocean while eating or just sitting. The hostel is a lovely spot to hang out and catch up on your emails (wifi is not free but I thought the price was quite reasonable), write up your travel journal, do your washing and generally relax for a day or two.

There is plenty to do in Punakaiki even if you don't have transport; the Pancake Rocks are only a few minutes away, you can rent a kayak to paddle the Pororari River and there are good walking tracks in the Paparoa National Park. There are a couple of shops/cafes at the entrance to the Pancake Rocks walk. All these are within a few minutes walk of the hostel. Or of course you can walk along the beach.

There are NO shops to buy groceries in Punakaiki, no petrol stations and NO banks. You need to bring all your food with you or plan to eat at the Tavern (which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and bar snacks and the food is excellent). You can use EFTPOS or a credit card in some places but the best idea is to bring enough cash with you.

A great hostel in an amazing location; felt more like a holiday home than a hostel! The guys who run it, and Swiss couple, are very friendly and eager to point you in the direction of local attractions.

Overlooking the beach, short walk to Pancake Rocks & Blowholes, and a great veranda off the kitchen to enjoy a sunny day (which it was anything but when I was there!!!!!).

I would definitely recommend it to others and would stay again. Only tip is to ensure you have all food, drink and cash that you may want as there is not any shops for about 50km!!!!! There is a tavern which apparently sells good food.

      Great location and hostel

The hostel is on the beach as the name suggests. We arrived without a booking and the friendly owner said go and have a look at a few rooms and let me know which one you'd like! We chose room 2 as we could see the sea from it.

The room had a big, solid, comfortable bed. The room was big enough for all of our stuff and still allowed us to walk around the room. The room also had a heat pump.

The bathrooms were downstairs, very clean and large hot showers.

The kitchen / dining / lounge area was well equipped - we wanted for nothing.

Great location, lovely room and friendly owners. if going to see the pancake rocks, stop for the night here and see the rocks on 2 different days - it can be very different. Highly recommended.

Punakaiki isn't really a town, more a collection of holiday houses or, as I've read in some American novels, a wide place in the road. There are several accommodation options but no shops, no petrol station, no banks (not even an ATM). But this is a beautiful spot where you can do a lot or nothing at all.
