A great hostel in an amazing location; felt more like a holiday home than a hostel! The guys who run it, and Swiss couple, are very friendly and eager to point you in the direction of local attractions.

      Fantastic position!

Overlooking the beach, short walk to Pancake Rocks & Blowholes, and a great veranda off the kitchen to enjoy a sunny day (which it was anything but when I was there!!!!!).

I would definitely recommend it to others and would stay again. Only tip is to ensure you have all food, drink and cash that you may want as there is not any shops for about 50km!!!!! There is a tavern which apparently sells good food.

      Great location and hostel

The hostel is on the beach as the name suggests. We arrived without a booking and the friendly owner said go and have a look at a few rooms and let me know which one you'd like! We chose room 2 as we could see the sea from it.

The room had a big, solid, comfortable bed. The room was big enough for all of our stuff and still allowed us to walk around the room. The room also had a heat pump.

The bathrooms were downstairs, very clean and large hot showers.

The kitchen / dining / lounge area was well equipped - we wanted for nothing.

Great location, lovely room and friendly owners. if going to see the pancake rocks, stop for the night here and see the rocks on 2 different days - it can be very different. Highly recommended.

Departing Christchurch I have headed anti-clockwise around the island, tending to remain as coastal as possible, so far. My South Island blogs will be labelled with periods of time, imagining the island to be a clockface, this will relate to my area of travel and hopefully make it easier to envisage back at home! 2 o'clock, anti-clockwise, to 9 o' …

We pulled out of the Abel Tasman waters today (after a 3 hour paddle). Leaving Te Pukatea Bay at about 9:00 am we found glassy water making out way through "The Mad Mile". We stopped at many picture perfect spots on the way home: Watering Cove, Adele Isalnd - saw many seals and maybe a penguin, Cyathea Cove, Stillwell Bay, Appletree Bay..... and …

Punakaiki is a tiny little place nestled against the sheer cliffs at the top of the West coast. Our backpackers is right by the beach; a very long, sandy white beach with a beautiful headland one side and a shallow river estuary the other. In the cliff above there is a face in the rock; a nose, forehead and two eyes forever gazing seawards. The …
