day 8 - tilcara

... at the hostel the guy had given me a flyer for.Nice flyer, nice photos, I decided to pop in and have a look. There are a number of "campgound" hostels here but this one just seemed odd and kinda runned down. I asked about a room, and the younger guy, got the older guy who showed me the room. He semed really nice and eager although not at all accustomed to speaking to those with limited spanish skills. Everytime I kinda gave a confused look and asked him to repeat, he ...

... m fairly far behind on this we´re now in Peru. But we´re going back to Bolivia soon. We extended our trip by a month to fit in a trip into the amazon and the canyons around Arequipa. We´re setting out on the trek to Machu Pichu on the 20th then we´re going back to La Paz, one of the most fascinating cities we´ve seen, and then we´re going to spend lots of money ...

La montagne aux 7 couleurs

Taking it slow in Tilcara

... 4000m above sea level. We will cross into Bolivia on Wednesday and take a train to Uyuni in the Altiplano. I´m not too sure about chewing coca leaves for the altitude but I´ll try anything once I suppose. It will be hard to leave here, but we are so relaxed and rejuvenated after spending four days doing virtually nothing that we ready to take on the next phase of the adventure .... the largest and highest salt flat in the world!

... to anyone considering. The electricity had been restored in our hostel by the time we got back (out when we arrived), and we enjoyed talking to a couple from Holland/Suriname (they spoke perfect english, of course). Lookie Lookie! Finally pictures, worth your time I promise. Click HERE for Tilcara, and our hostel at the abandoned train station. Humahuaca > La Quiaca > Villazón

... nice and I´m sure to buy something once I loose some of old clothes. As accommodation was really cheap (36 Argentinean Peso is approx £7) I decided to treat myself to a local Andean meal at the "El Portillo" Restaurant. I went for Lama in a local sauce with some potatoes and it was very nice too. All in all with a glass of Red Wine and a Coffee it cost around £10. So on Friday morning (with no ill effect of the meal) I was going to catch another "Balut" bus ...

Tilcara vacation

... pretty much a house, and we stayed in the other building which is like another house. It was well decorated and had two dogs. We had a pretty relaxing day. Tilcara is a small pueblo with dirt or rock roads. Apparently it is a huge tourist attraction (seeing as how I was there..) especially during Pascua (easter). We took a two hour siesta, shopped in the big craft/market place, then went to a pena that night for some good traditional food and amazing amazing music! I ...

Argentina...the land of red meat & mate

... Fancy boot dances...sword dances, drum dances...it's all there. Got some great footage...I'll try to load it but you may have to watch it when I get back. And the mate. Everybody drinks it...with little metal straws to filter out the herb. Tastes like tea to me...you can have it hot or cold....but the country is addicted to it. People carry around leather coolers of mate and sip on it all day...no exaggeration ...

... waitress kindly shows us the raw ingredients: an array of red, green and yellow potatoes from the Andes, quinoa which is creatvily used to make a milanesa, steamed puddings of rice and lots of different variations of llama meat. The almendrado, ice cream wrapped in crushed almonds is also mouthwatering. On our 3rd day we pass through the small town of Purmamarca (200 people) which is dominated by a rockface with 7 colours. We overtake several lorries heading ...
