... by a United Fruit Company scientist in 1932. He sifted through the rubble and, piece by piece, restored the mansion to its former glory then filled it with colonial-era antiques and art. The house includes a pigeon loft. Those pigeons provided the residents with their mail service.
Further south is the Church of San Francisco, one of the oldest churches in Antigua, dating from 1579. It eventually became a huge complex that included a ...
... to walk and speak which makes for an extremely entertaining time. His first word, to the disappointment of his parents, is "Puta" which, loosely translated in English, is "*****." The family tries to convince us he is saying "Fruta" (fruit) but we know better (Cesar recently admited to his involvement in Gabriel's first word). I dont know why, but there is nothing cuter that a little kid yelling "Puta" when people are trying to feed ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala lindseyhehman... some ever since my mom warned us when we were little. We'd cross into Mexico from Arizona and weren't allowed to touch anything until we washed our hands back in America because according to her the money there was filthy. Yes, now I have seen today exactly why we did things that we did back then. I've noticed that a lot of Central American women walk around with a Fort Knox jiggling right there in between their titties so be warned. I don't wish to find ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala atlpilot36We arrived in Antigua after another 5 hour bus ride. On arrival, i was quite surprised on how big it is. It is just as I pictured in terms of the coloured colonial style buildings and cobble streets etc.
Cassie and I checked into The Black Cat Hostel, which weŽd heard from the American guys that we met that it was a cool place to stay. I wouldnŽt describe it as cool!! OK, its got a nice bar and its probably a cool little hang out ...
We had one full day to explore Antigua. In the morning, we went to check out the local soccer team -- part of the Premier league here in Guatemala. Or, as it turns out, Premier B -- not quite the same. There were about four or five ...

We checked into a private room at a posada (inn) for 30Q ($6) a night and the day after we arrived, made a 'visa run' to Guatemala City, an hour away by chicken bus.

The walk was pure assent up the nearby mountain...I was expecting/hoping for a series of switchbacks on this trek. My spirit was broken about 1/3 of the way there when Aldo pointed out the peak of Pacaya which was still quite a distance away. For the sake of the entire group, I swallowed my pride and hired a ...
Pacaya, Western Highlands, Guatemala ndsquirrel... shopping at the market and got some really good deals some nice stuff. The next day we meet up with our friend george again and we went a climbed our last volcano and this time I conquered it, as we were sitting on the cold lava there was a rumble and the earth moved, we thought is was the valcano but no it was a small earthquake, no damage but pretty cool to expeerience. We fly home tomorrow and that ends another trip-adventure for another year.
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala andrewp... were a safe distance from the commotion. Looking up, we were astounded to see that the width of the lava was triple what it had been before our ascent. Only in Guatemala. The sunset view of the neighboring volcanoes was one of the most beautiful that we have ever seen, with one volcano offering a quick spew of black smoke just as the sky turned red. We hiked the rest of the way down with headlamps in the dark, glad to have done ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala chadsteph... going on and they were whacking a pinata. We stayed to watch the chaos when the sweets all fell out and the kids went crazy!!
Lake Atitlan is supposed to be one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. It is pretty nice with the volcanos around it, but it's not a patch on Lake Titicaca!! There is a serious lack of bars, cafes, or really anything actually on the lake, so there's nowhere to sit and watch the ...
