Since they are in Lonely Planet and Footprint gides they seem to attract people automatically. This seems to have an effect on the attitude of the staff which was often unfriendly, hectic and not really helpful.
The rooms are in three different buildings. Each has a separate kitchen and common area. The shower was almost cold. The WiFi worked the first day of our stay, then it did not work anymoe in the building where we had our room. When we informed the staff they did not care about it.
When someone cooked all the smell came in our room which was on the floor above the kitchen.
Not really a nice experience.

Overall, I was pleased with the Platypus Hostel. The staff was friendly, the rooms and facilities clean, and the travelers very diverse and interesting. The location was great relative to the sights in Candelaria. The only (major) drawback was my room--it was the only one directly on the courtyard, the only social gathering place of the hostel, and thus totally noisy and smokey all day and night. Also, the room was freezing--there is no insulation. In sum, happy with the hostel, not happy with the room.

Heading South to Ecuador... FINALLY!
I am FINALLY making my south- back to Ecuador. I thought it was high time! Bogota is an enormous city and one could probably spend a week or more here... but I am not enjoying the hustle and bustle all that much so I have decided to make this a whirlwind stop. Hitting 4 museums and the main plaza all in one day- and another 2 the next! I ran into …
TRAVEL DRAMAS - A LOW POINT OF MY TRIP
I hang about in San Gil until it is time to get the night bus to the capital, Bogota. As I get to the bus station, there is a woman yelling out "Bogota" - there is a bus about to go. So I buy a ticket off her and as I do so, I look up and see that the bus is not a large coach as the previous night bus was, but a small bus. I am a bit …
