Auckland appeared in the middle of some Spanish announcement from the airplane captain, it woke me from my slumber. So, earplugs out, eyemask off, blanket folded and seat upright and down we went into Auckland..... 3-30 in the bloody morning !!!
I waited for my collection - it arrived at 8-30 - from the carhire company and I picked up a little Toyota. The hire company even let me use the shower cubicle in the gents - How civilised.
I drove just around the c...
Today (which is also general election day, so maybe not a good day for current PM Helen Clark - which turns out to be the case, John Key and the National Party now lead the government in NZ) starts with a two-hour coach journey to Rotorua, an international tourist icon (just in case you didn't know!). There are 16 lakes in the vicinity of Rotorua, all formed from the craters of extinct volcanoes; you can see threads of steam escaping from pools in parks, pathways and on the streets, and there...
Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand hilaryaFri 15th Uuuuuuuuurrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhh!!! You ******? Probably, but that smell is actually the smelly geezas they got here. Sat around figuring out where we were gonna stay - decided on Nomad backpackers which was right next to the phone box! Checked in, 6bed dorms - unoccupied at the mo. Chiiiiilled then went to info place to look into white water rafting and zorbing. Decided on a place to go with for rafting - cheapest at about 25quid and still did the famous 7metre waterfall drop! Went s...
Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand jamboskeltyI visited Rotorua twice while I was in New Zealand. Rotorua must be one of the best tourist attractions of New Zealand and it's very accessible from Auckland. It smells of sulfur around the town and it was the first time to visit a smelly city like that. I walked around all over the city and enjoyed geysers and boiling mud pools. Kuirau Park is located in the centre of the city and has free entrance fee, so everyone can enjoy the major attraction of Rotorua. Tourism Rotorua was very helpful t...
Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand misocutletWith the good fortune of having a day off for queen Lizzys birthday (McAleese get the thumb out) we left early on saturday for Rotorua, home of NZs geothermal landscape. If you look at the north island map you will see a distinct dark red line running the length of the country from Cape Reinga to the city of Wellington appearing motorway-like in appearance. It's no more a motorway than our own Cork-Dublin route changing to a national road just outside central Auckland. The diligently obeyed 1...

... the park and then a sulphur spa in sulphur thermal waters from the park while overlooking the park with steam rising from the fumeroles etc. Jack found a hair in the mudbath and was not happy after that! Specially as we had seen a poster in the visitors centre warning not to put your head under the mud in these places because of the risk of deadly amoebic meningitis! There were instructions not to at the spa too but not ...
Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand yvetteandjackGreetings from Rotorua, the cultural capital of New Zealand. In an hour we will be taken to a Maori Hangi ceremony and concert. I'm excited because our bus driver Day-mo (I think his real name's Damien) told us there is excellent all you can eat food. And there will be some fun Maori stuff, I'm sure. I just hope that unlike Derek Zoolander I don't run into two Finnish dwarves as well. We've only been here three full ...
Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand jimmyandkristen... the village then and now. The village came to the spot they now are in after a volcano erupted and they had to leave their other village. They use the thermals for baths and cooking. And he said that they have such good skin because of the thermals. Food is cooked by the steam in the ground in boxes that are dug into the ground. He called them their microwaves! We also got to see a cultural performance of singing ...
Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand andreat... dragging the girls into our boat. The drama! We kept our boardshorts on after rafting and went straight to Zorbing which involves hopping into a big plastic ball of water and rolling downhill. Really good fun, albeit the fun is over really quickly for the price! We headed to Amy Royston's gaff that evening and had some dinner with herself and Mike who were kind enough to let us kip in their spare room for two nights. The next day we went to the blue lake which is outside Rotorua ...
Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand dacraicToday I woke up around 10am. The other person who was sleeping in my room left really early, probably around 7am to catch a bus, so now I have the entire room to myself oh yeah! This is the first time all trip that I've had a room of my own and it is quite nice. After waking up and jumping on all of the beds in my room, four total, I got dressed, ate breakfast (eggs, toast, and OJ) then headed into town. I met up with a few people who I met at the hostel ...
