The Magical Bolivian Desert

Lori:

We arrived in Uyuni on Saturday by way of a newly paved road from Potosí. This ride, three years so would have taken six hours, but we made it in a hair raising three, with this Bolivian driver taking every mountain switchback at consistent speeds, namely fast, and we were thankful for the guide rails, even as bags from the overhead …

Just to let you know, I have tried numerous times to upload photos to this blog but it has failed (except for one). I thought I would send you all the written content (surely that's what you love more) for now and we'll upload pics when we have a better Internet connection. Enjoy!

After a 5 hour drive and an agonizingly long wait at the border we finally made it into Bolivia. After passing through customs we met our guide Juan, who was waiting for us by a Land Cruiser to take us on a 2 day tour of the Uyuni salt flats and altiplano lagoons. He was not much of a talker but seemed to know what he was doing. After breakfast we …

Uyuni - Salt Flats!

So we arrived in Uyuni after our long journey and went to find RedPlanet's office to see if the trip was going ahead - we weren't sure because of bad snow further down the road...but thankfully all was fine and we went for dinner to Minuteman Pizza which was recommended in Lonely Planet but it was only ok! Uyuni is definitely a town that has not …

I think the best place for budget travellers in Uyuni

Great hostal....very organized hostel. It is clean. The wifi is strong. There are communal areas outside and in, with a TV and DVD player. There is a communal kitchen. The beds were extremely comfortable and warm with fleece blankets. This hostal is right on the plaza close to everything you need, including restaurants, tour offices and the central mercado.

Beds are large and comfortable. Hostel is warm. Showers are hot. This may not seem like much but for Uyuni this is actually a miracle! Other than that there's no wifi but thats pretty much the case in the entire town. even the internet cafe's have dodgy connection. WOuld recommend.

Very good located on the center and very close to the train station. 7 mins walk from the buses. Beds a bit old but with good linen, breakfast ok, but not very kind served, when it rains, it rains also in the rooms.
