They're bringing donkey back

After a very quick border crossing (only 2 min again) to Aqaba, I hailed a taxi and made a decision to disregard my budget and take it all the way to Petra. It was an easy ride through the night spent chatting with my interesting driver. A really nice guy, full of interesting stories, he told me about he recent trip to deliver fuel to Baghdad. He said that it's heartbreaking to see the poverty and violence, but that it's quite safe. Don't worry, I'm not getting any ideas about going there. He...

Petra: the Final Finale

We traveled to Petra from Madaba on Friday. We took a bus from Madaba to Karak and from Karak to Wadi Musa. Our Hostel "The Petra Gate Hotel in Wadi Musa is just a 10min. walk to the entrance of Petra. We spend two days touring the remote dead city of Petra. It is undoubtedly the most important famous attraction in all of Jordan. Entering Petra you can't help being awe-struck by its beauty and by the monumental work it took to build this rose-red city. The Nabataeans who build Petra were trul...

Petra

For three days, Petra was a place to roam and explore, a place full of twists and turns and ever-changing colors as the sun arced in the sky. This was one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, thanks to multiple votes from almost every Jordanian with access to the internet, but one perhaps well deserved because of its beauty, history, and archaeology all intertwined. Descending into the massive sandstone Jabals surrounding Petra every morning was my first step and showed just how impenetrabl...

Petra by Night

... area is approximately 40 sq km.

At about 8pm we headed off to meet the Petra by night tour. There were about 100 people doing it and we were told that we must walk down through the Siq in single file in silence. It was pretty amazing as the narrow path was lit all the way with candles. We can already see that this place is pretty stunning and we can’t wait to see it in daylight. Seeing the Treasury for the first time was mindblowing ...

Petra, Jordan (And Indiana Jones!)

... we’ve had on this tour.

Around 9:45am, I met my folks (and most of the rest of the group) for a beautiful breakfast in the restaurant – cereals, yogurts, pastries, various cold and hot salads, and numerous cold and hot buffet items, as well as a make-your-own omelet stand. After a solid 8-9 hours of sleep, we all looked MUCH BETTER than I had seen us in days (still in sleep deprivation mode, of course, but an improvement over the last 48 ...

Incredible, but waaaay too touristy!

... about a place...

Some interesting stats so far (after 30 days of travelling):

89 hours and 45 spent on bus/taxi/shuttle
slept in 10 hotels
spent 4 nights on the bus
1 lost watch (Manolo lost the watch he had just purchased in Instanbul a few days later on our trip to mount nemrut)
1 game of chess
several kilos of bananas and uncountable liters of tea

Next Stop: Dahab, EGYPT!

The King came to tea but I wasn't there

... they had taken.

By this time I was into donkey and camel territory and was being offered them left right and centre. I'm not sure why the transport, such as it is, is so segregated - other than to fool more weary (or gullible) tourists into paying multiple times.

The walk down reminded me of a far less crowded Palatine Hill with what must have been magnificent temples ...

Rock Me Baby

... there is so much furniture, much of it non-functional. They place a fair size TV right at the corner of our bed which is sure to cause a hazard in the evening. Like the kind of rock me, baby, we don’t need. We quickly unplug it and move it to a neutral corner.

Petra itself is at an elevation of 1,200 m. (3,937 ft.) and is extremely hilly. The roads wind up and down and criss cross the many hills. Of course, the hotel is nowhere ...

Worth the drive!

... we stopped at a few little stores along the way. One guy, Antonio, gave Jaylynn a keychain with Petra sand. He also gave us a couple of boubles as a gift. Man, these guys are so nice. Another guy came up and gave Jaylynn a small bunch of bananas. Jaylynn had attached herself to me for this trip so everyone thinks she is my daughter. . . She is all sweetness and no 'Ls.' (that is she can't say the letter L.)
Then it was time for sleep. . .

Dan & Kath and the Last Crusade

... that we would walk (well that should be hike) up to the high alter of sacrifice. So the awesome foursome were off after walking the few kms to get to the bottom of the trail to the alter we all took a big breath and then we started up. The first few km wasn't so bad but after a while of just trudging up the dusty trail in the beating sun it gets hard. Luckly we were able to cross over to the other side of the gorge and be out of the sun.....ahhh thats better. Next thing we know ...
