Making ready to leave (by boat...)

So now I'm back in Paihia/Opua in the north of NZ... I returned here after one night in Auckland. I hitched back up here, and as usual it went really easy. I'm now staying in the Peppertree, its a nice hostel, they got a good dvd collection and a weekly rate. wednesday I then went out to Opua, walked around the marina and talked to all the boats. I found two boats who would take me with them. One of them was a danish boat, who had contacted me before. After I had found the two boats, I decide...

Bay of Is-lands

Ok so I'm in Paihia, nice little beach town, and here i shall be for the next 3 day. Straight away down the beach for an hour then back to my great little hostel. Peppertree lodge. Reasonable rooms, really helpful staff, free kayaks and bikes. BIIIKES! So in the spirit of my friend John Hayes, i went a cycling, my mission waterfalls 6km away. 12km, that'll be easy i thought. YEAH, until i hit the massiiive, hill and another and another. Was a great ride though and well worth it. John, i hope ...

Day 206 - The Irish girls in my dorm kindly acted as my alarm clock this morning, coming home from a night out at the same time I needed to get up! As I waited for the bus to the Bay of Islands outside the Fat Camel, who should I bump into but John (from China and Sydney)! He was also on Stray but going south so it was a brief hello before I got on my minibus to Paihia. We drove almost directly there, stopping in Kawakawa to see the famous public toilets that were Austrian architect Hundertwa...

Tramping, despite the rain

It's evening now, about 7:31 PM and my last entry was this morning from Mangonui; I had been attaching more pictures when the power went out due to the rain. Here's how the day progressed: We drove to Cape Reinga--the place we were most looking forward to on this vacation, but especially me... The rain was horizontal and we were geared from head to sandaled-foot in rain gear as we ran down the path toward the much-anticipated lighthouse at the tip of the island. When we were standing right be...

Paihia + Cape Reinga = Sunshine

Week 2. I made it out of Auckland, up north to Paihia in the Bay of Islands. A beautiful seaside town, complete with beaches and, best of all, sunshine.

The tip of the North!

And now I'm finally up to date! Well, once this one is finished I will be! For some reason I've just noticed that my photos are being weaved into my entries and not at the right places - I'll try and fix that but no promises! Anyway, moving on from my last stop in Auckland. That night we decided to go for happy hour in the bar - we managed to squeeze in 4 drinks in that hour and were a little tipsy when we started the quiz. We were useless and realised this very early on so decided to give u...

Farming, kiwi style

Got to the Lotus Farm at 2 pm. Fantastic people, beautiful house. Moved cattle, rode in the back of four-wheeler, weeded some... great weather after one rainy day and one beatific sunny day in Paihia at the Peppertree Lodge. The house here as a 360 view, consists of windows and balcony doors and you can walk out anywhere, perfect house really... love to be able to just walk out the window. Great views of the garden, flowers, pastures, run-away sheep. Weeded, mowed, vacuumed, raked today. It g...

Home for a while

In less than 24 hours from arriving in Palmerston North, accommodation and jobs are nearly sorted out and we have a free laptop! That means we can finally get up to date with travelpod entries and emails without spending our hard earned cash in internet cafes. We landed at a lovely YHA hostel - The Peppertree hostel. We could happily stay here for a few weeks, we thought, until things were sorted out, making friends with Fred the cat. However, this was not meant to be as an apartment was avai...

Road Tripping

As we weren't picking up our camper until the 6th, Hannah and Jet very kindly offered us a lift up to the Bay of Islands in their car. We crammed all our kit in together with their mattress, camping stove, chairs and table and headed north on our first road trip. We drove to Paihia which is the main town in the area but still amazingly undeveloped when compared to Europe. Paihia was the site of the signing of the treaty between Britain and the Maori in 1840. On our first full day we took a sa...

Der Raum hatte natuerlich Glaswaende - also B...

On the Road Again

... I was immediately awestruck by the beauty of this room. I felt as if I could hardly breath as I looked about. Before me a large, long gleaming wood floor so polished that each grain of wood seemed to stand out. Carved reed panels alternate with larger then life carvings of Maori ancestors, and these cover all the walls from floor to ceiling. The ceiling is gabled and each section of the rafters is painted with intricate designs ...
