The best place to stay in the world

The staff are all extremely helpful with recommendations: when you tell them what you want to do they don't just say "this is the best one" they give you their choice and then tell you why along with giving you all the information about other options and why they may be some one else's top pick. There is free coffee 24-7 (which is a huge perk), a huge and clean kitchen, nice hang out area and somehow everyone that was here got along very well when we were in. They close the main area at 10pm, which leads most travelers to bond over beer in the bar down the road. We planned to only stay here 1 day and ended up staying for 4 solely because the hostel was so great. 6 dollar dorms and 30 dollar private rooms with bathroom in summer 2011. no hot water.

Apart from all those touristy not very naturebound activities there are a lot of animals to see in the cloud forest. During the night tour you meet orange knee tarantulas, walking sticks, a green viper - one of the most venomous snakes around here- and sleeping birds. The day tour offered us the rare opportunity to see a Quetzal, a beautiful bird …

Monteverde - or the cloud forrest- is an amazingly beautiful place, the nature is just amazing. The little town/ village Santa Elena- consisting of two roads and I dont know how many hostels is the place to stay. Its super touristy, and there is a lot of touristy things to do- and since I am a tourist I did them- the Canopy tour or Zipline tour. …

The Cloud Forest on a Sunny Day

You can never spend enough time walking through forests in mountains. That's why, after spending a week in the mountains around Orosi, we made our way to the cloud forests of Monteverde. Monteverde is a beautiful and unique nature reserve, perched high in the clouds. Not long ago it was an untouched slice of heaven, where you could spot a variety …

... are no clouds directly above us it is raining. Rain falling from a blue sky is odd. We take random foliage pictures and some of each other. Toward the end we see some white-faced monkeys. I manage to get a pic or two (they donīt like to pose) before they scamper off into the trees. We come out of the rain forest somehow on private property. The Costa Rican government doesnīt have enough money to buy all the land around ...
