A Capital time in Beijing

Arrived here on Tuesday morning by China Eastern flight from Xi'an. First impressions of Beijing are good. In fact we reckon so far that this is the best place we have been in China, as a tourist at least, although Shanghai could arguably be an easier place to live as a westerner. Beijing is certainly more 'chinese feeling' and has far more of the country's historically significant sites. On the day we arrived we visited Tiananmen Square (including the 'fascinating' flag lowering ceremony at ...

Beijing Beijing Beijing!

After another 6 hour train ride I arrived in Beijing. Or civilisation! Hoped in a taxi and stayed one night the Peking International Youth Hostel. I was sharing a 4 bed dorm the size of a shoe box with 2 german brothers and 1 infected german girl. The place was nice. Small areas and free internet so that was a bonus. Nothing to exciting to report.

Legendary. Thats all.

Wow, long time no post. I always thought that if i ever created a blog of any sort i would post everyday and be completly diligent but i suppose my expectations of myself are just much to high. Anyhoo, During the national holiday the ruckus crew headed to to a little city called Beijing. It was easily one of the most amazing places i've every been and the four days we were there didn't give us near enough time to even scrape the surface of the city. We were dedicated tourists though and made ...

I Love BJ

The car on the platform was possibly the most appropriate welcome one could receive to Beijing (or BJ, as all the t-shirts say), as the place is utterly insane. The sheer mass of bodies in the Beijing Train Station alone is enough to make you think that China's 1.3 billion people all live in the one city! And attempting to catch a taxi with those 1.3 billion people (plus the 100 or so newly arrived and equally bewildered foreigners) is an experience in itself! Once we finally managed to get t...

The GREAT Wall

The Great Wall is amazing.
Our driver picked us up from the hostel at 7am. We had about a 2 hour drive to the Wall. There are several different places that one can access the Great Wall. Some of them are completely restored and easily accessible, but also very very busy. We didn't want to visit a place that was very busy. So we chose a spot that was a little farther away, and not completely restored but still in it's original form. We decided to do a 10 km point to point hike on the Wall f...

beijing

been in beijing for a couple of days now and i must say that overall, my feelings for beijing is extreme disappointment. nowhere is new china more obvious than walking around this ancient city.

dirty, polluted, and crowded. the whole time we've been here, it's been smoggy and overcast. and bitterly cold. it's hard to believe that pollution can be worst anywhere in the world compared to wuhan. but beijing has definitely topped it. nick and i walk around and i clutch my chest in pain wi...

Tea Time in Beijing

War also kein H1N1. Besser so :) Ich fand dann auch bald mal eine Post und so hab ich ein neues Paket mit den selben Sachen erstellt und diesmal auch gerade abgeschickt. Gut so. ...

Sejour a Beijing prise 1

THE GREAT WALL (aka-the original stairmaster)

... filling it with enamel and working it (7 stages)--well, I've never appreciated it before. It's what decorated the Emperor's palace in the Mingh Dynasty (sp?). Then, it was off to the Great Wall. I think I had always imagined it was just this LOOOOoooong wall that stood to keep out the enemies. It is...but it's not built on ANYTHING flat. The whole thing is just like Maudia's dream...a true "stairway to heaven." :) I didn't feel bad when even the ...
