Lima

Our flight to Lima from Santiago was some three hours late due to an excess of smoggy stuff outside. This to us was the norm in Santiago anyway, but seemingly it was thicker than normal, so we got to wander around the airport for 5 hours looking at the same stuffed alpaca toys and ponchos until they almost seemed the height of chic. We had spent most of our pennies on a bottle of Jim Beam and some Clinique makeup (we are all class, and are still cheating at the backpacker game!) so we only ju...

We have finally arrived!!!!

Well we have finally arrived and are so excited. We received both our bags which is miracle considering everything we have been through. We had Dennis from Pay Purix Backpackers Hostel waiting for when we arrived. Boy are we glad he was there because there was a mob of people, it made it so easy. The rooms are nice and clean, just what we need for the short time we are here. We go back to the airport in 5 hours for our flight to Iquitos. Cant wait to see some of Peru besides the airport. Unti...

Leaving Buenos Aires to Lima

At the airport I checked in pretty easily and was soon on my way to Lima. The flight was with Aerolineas Argentinas and I wouldn't recommend them. There was no entertainment on the 5 hour flight and the food was also pretty poor. At Lima I'd booked a hostel called Pay Purix which offers an airport transfer, and the guy from the hostel was waiting for me with a sign when I arrived. The hostel was so lovely. I had a four-bed dorm to myself which was so clean and had lockers with keys and its ow...

My plane touched ground in Lima at 5:30 in the morning, but after clearing customs and getting duped into taking an excessive Mercedes taxi out of the airport, it was past 7 when my friend Rachel and I got to our first Hostel. Just a few blocks from the airport, this neighborhood had it all - skinny rabid stray dogs, trucks full of cages full of chickens, and a green-brick hostel with no sign and no answer when we rang the doorbell. We stood about five minutes knocking and were ready to go to...

lima es crazy!

November 2-3, 2009
So the trip begins!!!! Monday seemed to be one long day and i know all of us were ready to be done with all the preperation and packing and just get to lima already. But before that we all got up at 9 and slowly but surely finished packing up our bikes, weighing, re-weighing, and then re-weighing one more time. We didn't get on the road to bretts grandparents house until 5 and then we got stuck in a traffic jam for over an hour to make matters even worse. We finally go...

the sad but joyess finish

Day 23-24 120 miles

So we did it, we finished up our ride and its kind of anti climatic. We are excited that we did what we set out to do but at the same time we are all going to miss riding, especially after that last 2 days. Yesterday started off with a bang when we found a tourist resteraunt that had a good breakfast to start off our day. We needed it because the first 3/4 of the day was climbing. We climbed and climbed up this pretty awesome canyon (it seems every canyon here is ...

final mubles and musings

I know why you're here... You're here because at some point over the last month the once seemingly inconceivable combination of brians titilating photos and potent descriptions of a days ride, coupled with my somehow palatable redundancies of the "lighter side of things", AND the added anticipation of a first blog post from the romantically elusive Stephen "you can't put a Price on this body" Schenkel; have at some point blended together to form a perfectly healthy addiction, more griping tha...

cuz i had to

dear readers,
tomorrow we head back to the states after 5 weeks of our peruvian adventure. since i havent written an entry on the blog the entire trip, i am obligated, and somewhat forced to do so... I consider myself a poor writer, and therefore do not enjoy it, and i am certainly no brett crompton, so bare with me as i fulfill my obligatory duty.
first i would like to start off by stating that my feet arent as bad as described in previous entries. I admit that they dont smell o...

Finally in Lima

Buenos dias!! W koncu... Po dlugich przygotowaniach i nerwowym dokanczaniu wszystkich obowiazkow w pracy, nareszcie jestesmy w Limie! Wczorajszy przelot do Madrytu odbyl sie bez zadnych niespodzianek. Bylysmy natomiast zachwycone madryckim lotniskiem.

On to Lima, via Panama with Copa airlines

Amazing how much we managed to pack into this day: I started at 6.30 on the computer, and met Paul Eric for breakfast at 7.30 - the usual healthy stuff! After that, there was time for a last swim before the heavy job of packing. We checked out and left our stuff in the hotel luggage room, and walked in the heat to Florida Mall, about 10-15 mins. It was almost too much! We love this place with all the variety and some low prices. Here we managed to get some cool shoes for Paul Eric with suitab...

our plane ride went just fine and dandy. if only all our long distance trips were in such comfort and with such little hassle! i quite enjoy flying. its smooth, and you get to watch films, although the food sucks! we land in lima, and i am practically bouncing down to the bag collection area. i skip alongside our taxi man as he picks us up at the gate, and wiggle in the car as we speed downtown, my head practically out of the window like a dog! the cityscape is ...
