Settling into Paradise
My first few days here I stayed in a hostel called Parrotfish, which I'd heard was very nice and I had some money off vouchers for - I wasn't that impressed, mostly due to the staff and the state of the kitchen but we had a nice dorm and the pool looked good. On the bus here I met a girl called Bierget from Germany and that afternoon we explored …
Day out with the Kuku Yalanji
No visit to northern Queensland is complete without getting to know the Aboriginal cultures and traditions. Since arriving in Cairns Aboriginals have been more a normal part of day to day life than in my last weeks of travel. Still I don't really know anything about them but would like to deepen my knowledge about this, undoubtedly important, part …
Australia
Australia Northern Territory My flight from Bali to Australia was short at an hour and a half; it made me think how far I'd travelled during my nine months. I was in the Northern Territory only briefly, to venture into what people refer to as 'the real Australia'. I'd booked a three day camping trip into the National Parks of Kakadu and Litchfield …
Port Douglas to Cape Trib

I checked into the the ParrotFish Lodge only to discover that my dorm mates were a couple from the U.S. (Kevin and Olga). They have been traveling since June and seemed nice, so when they sounded interested in coming …
Port Douglas & Cape Tribulation
We were now in Tropical Far North Queensland and pretty much surrounded by rainforest. We headed up from Cairns to Port Douglas which seems like a fairly well off town where people just seem to moor their yachts and head up for weekends. The drive up from Cairns was spectacular – right on the coast line so the ocean came right up …

TravelPod Member ReviewsParrotfish Lodge Backpackers Resort Port Douglas
The hostel was noisy most of the time, with a large TV right outside our room running at all hours. Dishes were for rent, so you had to watch your set the whole time. The kitchen was cleaned regularly by staff, but still managed to be revolting most of the time - no one cleaned up after themselves. The kitchen was locked until 8:30 ish, so if you had an early departure you couldn't get your own food. Pool and rooms were clean.
