DIVING INTO DAKAR

... was lovely and leaving wasn't easy at all.

Anyway, we had
diving in Dakar to distract us and so soon settled into the incredible
Oceanium right beside the sea and sorted ourselves out with a
dive...back out at gorgeous Goree...couldn't keep us away eh! Being
back beneath the waves was wicked and as ever worlds away from any
experience on land. Lovely!

XXX

XXX
Serekunda.... But not for long

... keep saying that isn't not actually hot and I know I can last the next 1.5weeks but im not sure how Jori will last 5freaking months. The people are great here, very friendly, tons of starring and yelling tobab (white man)... but you take it in stride and smile at everyone. There are some tourists/peace core/other "tobabs" around but it's a rarity to see people walking around away from the tourists' places. The tourist "places"(beaches, markets, etc) have some bumsters who ...

THE GAMBIA!

... which is the best book ive picked up in my life. No food, no water, nothing... everything costed money. But my packaged lunches and snacks were well enjoyed. Somehow 6hours flew by and next thing i knew i was circling for 45minutes above what looked like a run way(thank you dad for the story about the landing gear because i was preping for skidding across a field). Landed and got through "passport and customs ...

Gambia Senegal tour by bike

... even though I was volunteering all the information. He kept waving the glow sticks and asking me if there was anything I wanted to give him, followed by more questions about the items I was carrying... and little about where I had been and what I was doing. I kept repeating the glow sticks were toys for the children and pointed to the kid on the front of the packet warring one, but I gave up and said he could take them, it ...

Introduction Reading for Day 4

... of a long tunic and pants that most men are wearing for Friday prayer today) He will voice his discontent and his dissatisfaction, but at the end of the day, he can laugh with our Wolof teacher and guide Babucar at the fact that President Jammeh has declared he found the cure for AIDS using a traditional medical rub in order to gain support among Gambians (albeit, he rubs his forehead a bit as he laughs). Also, he does invest himself in the long, arduous task of small and practical ...

Introduction Reading for Day 2

... own rooms within the same compound walls. This is a sort of adaptation from the village-style housing, where several huts of an extended family are grouped together, often behind enclosures, providing a close set-up that supports a strong sense of mutual responsibility support inside families. Though there is much activity in your compound, Ramadan gives a feeling of peacefulness and reflection to everything. The days seem to be overcome with a slow, hot lethargy as ...

the makings of a feminist

... these. This might make Westerners more comfortable here, but we would be stupid, even in a university classroom, to suggest that maybe traditions should be questioned, or sources of tradition be reexamined. Even to suggest that society moves forward is an assumption. I suppose all of this just boils down to the very obvious fact that we are in a different place, and I have to accept that these differences extend far further than a different scenery with more goats ...

10 ridiculous things a day

... us from making the completely unwise decision to go to this man's compound (luckily it was not so dangerous as it could have been, the streets were busy, the compound was filled with other people, and in general the Gambian style is not well set up for violent crime, most is pick pocketing and conning). Yet we were duped by a desire to be friendly and see and know Gambian people. And this is what makes this event more than just a ridiculous story to me. Sitting there, listening ...

Malaria and other Monsters

... are binding your ankles together). First hurdle over, I crept nervously back towards the now eerily silent toilet bowl, brandishing a nearby bleach spray to defend myself. Just as I was psyching myself up to peer inside and thereby prove to myself I had imagined the whole thing, I came nose to nose with a terrified lizard making a list ditch (failed) attempt to hurl himself to freedom before plunging back into his white prison. It's difficult to know who screamed louder ...

During the 10-day period of treatment , the vital signs and weights of the patients were closely monitored and their conditions improved. Eight of the patients showed a mark increased in weight, ranging from 3 kilograms to 15 kilograms.
