After a stop for lunch we made it to the visitor's centre then, after a chat to one of the rangers to check out what was open/available we were off to walk down a lava tube. This is basically a tunnel in the lava caused by the narrow river of lava becoming solidified at the edges and then over the surface leaving the lava flowing in the tube which is formed. Off we went to find the Lava Tree State Park, we walked through a forest of lava trees, the trees were burnt away by the molten lava and what was left was the cooled lava that had backed up around the tree most of them were hollow were the tree used to be. Cool.

On the crater floor there are steam vents still steaming which is scalding hot from the lookout it looked long, flat and uninteresting but we found it very interesting.
