... over the years they have slowly removed it to reveal the mud and clay bricks. They have even turned part of it into a stage where they can do performances, while I can picture it making the setting for the performances nice, I think it kind of ruins the place a little. ... the first big series of switchbacks we stopped to take some photos and have a breather.

All was too good! Don's bike would not start. A flat battery but no obvious cause. All too familiar after the issues with Colin's bike. So back to using RG's bike to charge the battery. Fortunately the road improved and we could improve our average speed to about 90 kph.
