... yellow all around. The sun didn't fully disappear until gone 10pm when the moonlight took over and illuminated the sky. It was just magic! We stopped briefly at a dainty pub in the middle of nowhere to have a beverage before heading on for a further hour. I noticed a lake sparkling alongside us as we drove through the darkness and we then stumbled across a free camp spot. We reversed up so that we could see the view in the morning and excitedly tried to get to sleep. ...

... our hotel here cancelling our reservation as earthquake repairs from the 2011 quake were still not complete. We managed to book into the Novotel but can't say we were overly impressed with the notice given. We had been warned that the city was still struggling after the disaster three years ago, but nothing prepared us for the scale of it. Decided to continue the sightseeing with a trip down the coast towards Lyttelton, which is the major port for the South Island and the epicentre of quake #1 in 2010.
