          The drive and the diesel

... with no divider. Sometimes there isn't even a centerline. The number of close calls I've had when a 50mph gust pushes one car towards the other at a closing speed of 120mph is something I don't want to think about right now. The Diesel itself is quite nice, now that I've gotten used to it... Lots of get up and go when I need it, fuel-sipping economy when I don't. Only real problem is that it ...

... more glaciers but were too tired. Too tired for glaciers! Then we saw the mother of all glaciers... I remember driving up there, the cars dwarfed by the size of this massive glacier. We walked down only to see a picture perfect glassy lagoon bay with icebergs in it and a huge glacier heading into the lagoon, surrounded by two other glaciers. Massive mountains either side. ...

We then went to the black sand beach where there was a build up of ice bergs.

We then went onto something similar a dairy farm making icecream. Two smallish scoops for $5.50.

The restaurants in this town advertise "geyser baked bread" which is actually baked in outdoor steam ovens. A young woman in a florist/gift shop told us that many Icelanders speak three or four languages "because nobody else in the world speaks Icelandic." She also claimed that most people here are quite "liberal" in their beliefs, often travel to Scandinavian countries for ...

... living in New Zealand, so we did a couple of walks around the area ourselves. All in all we would have walked about 12 ks today, so it is with great relief we're back in the hotel, having stopped at our local ice supply on the beach and picked up a large piece of berg crystal for our drinks. Some say the ice formed 1000 years ago. That makes some scotch on the rocks! The ice is as clear as crystal. Chris is clinking them in his glass as I ...
