... up to have a look from the view point and behind it was the terrifically brilliant glacial lagoon full of icebergs. Real icebergs. We drove down a little further and on the left was the lagoon where we were able to take masses of photos of huge icebergs with seals swimming around them. We stayed there for quite some time as it was so amazing and every way you looked there was something even better then what you had just been looking at. Then we crossed over the road ...

We got a bit confused during the day because we kept seeing signs for different named glaciers, thinking there were many of them. However, we realised later that they were all part of the Vatnajökull Glacier and the separate names are the branches or the tongues that protrude from it.

As tourists try to take pictures of some of these beauties, they just stop their cars anywhere to do ...

... it was very dry and looked like sphagnum moss for plants.

We had a short break at a lovely little village (name unknown) that was named for two nuns who did good work in the area. They met a sticky end that and were executed for saying rude things about the pope or having sex or something else equally outrageous for a nun.

Then we had more lava fields and lots of bridges over gushing torrents of water that were 'no passing'. At least once ...
