... more glaciers but were too tired. Too tired for glaciers! Then we saw the mother of all glaciers... I remember driving up there, the cars dwarfed by the size of this massive glacier. We walked down only to see a picture perfect glassy lagoon bay with icebergs in it and a huge glacier heading into the lagoon, surrounded by two other glaciers. Massive mountains either side. ...

The eruptions also created massive electrical storms. And apparently Eyjafjallajökull eruptions tend to precede much more powerful sub-glacial eruptions from Katla, another sub-glacial volcano, which lies just 25 km west so we did tend to pick up the speed as we drove in this area.

... pouring down every side. Our first glimpse of Vatnajökull was incredible. The area is huge when you see it on a map and the currently active volcano, Bárdabunga sits at the NW. There is a massive cone reaching too far back to see with other dome peaks all over it. Spearing down on all sides of it are massive glaciers - some take up 3/4 of the car's side windows. We chose Skaftafellsjökull as it was relatively easy to get to and you could walk up close ...
