So we've been in Melbourne for about 3 weeks now, touring and now working. We've managed to move through three different hostels and are now palced at Bev and Mick's Market Inn. We travelled around Melbourne for our first week, seeing the sites! We walked around Fitzroy Garden and ventured into Cook's Cottage (an 1800's explorer). This city is so facinating, old buildings smack in the middle of new buildings, and random parks in the middle of it all. You learn very quick why there's an argume...
Melbourne, Australia aussie_tripI must apologize ahead of time to those that are from Melbourne, have been to Melbourne and loved it, or have heard rave reviews and are heading there. I didn't love Melbourne, however I believe I am slightly basis for a number of factors. One, the weather was ****, rainy, overcast and cold. Two, I stayed at a very sketchy hostel with some very sketchy people (Nomads Market Inn). Let me set the scene. I arrive around 12 in the afternoon on Friday, Manager/front desk man is sitting at the desk...

... wise, hopefully my cousins will give me something in their factory for the 10 days or so running up to Christmas, then let me work for them for another couple of weeks after New Year before I go to do my fruit picking.
I've also applied for a job as an online editorial assistant at the Australian Open, which starts on January 18th and runs for two weeks. It's completely voluntary so I wouldn't get paid a cent for it, if I get the job, but I don't care about that - it's ...
... the winning side - yeah Go Maroons!
Over the first weekend in June there was a public holiday here in honour of the Queens birthday (not sure why we dont get to celebrate that one in the UK) so Heather and I went down the Great Ocean Road again with her friends Lee and Tanya to Skenes Creek. Again the weather wasnt great (well it is winter here) but we had a lovely relaxing weekend and I went to my first bonfire on the beach in australia! At the end of ...
... with Andrew and his girlfriend. We started in the Dan O'Connell where they had an outdoor festival type bar with limited choice of beer but fast enough moving queues, the cleanest portaloos ever and had a U2 tribute band who were actually pretty good. That night ended pretty early as it was outdoor so we headed to the Clifton Hill Hotel where they had a trad band playing and I hadn't a clue of any words to any songs. The place was full of many unsavory characters. No ...
Melbourne, Victoria, Australia alandrach... game of Aussie Rules - I'm not sure that giggling at the men in white gloves with the flags was the way to endear myself to my host, but it is just such an entertaining game. The game itself was not great as the local team got THUMPED, but I still thoroughly enjoyed the evening.......
I was very sad to leave Melbourne, as there were more people that I didn't get a chance to catch up with there. I guess that I will just have to come back again soon!
... If a tout was polite, I would respond in kind. If a tout yelled from a distance, I ignored them. If touts shoved goods under your nose, if you showed any interest at all they would follow you for ages to get a sale, but if one simply moved forward with purpose with no more than a glace and maybe a quick "No Thanks" then you were not bothered. If one does not say "No" with conviction, touts can assume you are interested by are just ...
Melbourne, Victoria, Australia ed.herweynen... dipped in chocolate. They have all flavors like carmel and toffee, but everyone assured me that the double dipped chocolate ones were the best. We bought a box and headed home so we could make the necessary hot chocolate for my first TIM TAM SLAMMER experience. Basically a Tim Tam slammer involves biting off opposing corners of the cookie (so you are breaking through the chocolate coat ...
Melbourne, Victoria, Australia grmf... I enjoyed the long drive. I was lucky to be in a small enough group that we could fit in a minivan, this speeding up the driving portions of the trip. Unfortunately, the crew I was with were pretty freakin' boring and I spent most of the day alone. I took more pictures than I've taken in a long time tho!
Are you one of those people who have always been told you look like someone ...
