Merida

After my sightseeing tour in Chichen Itza, i am now landed in Merida in the Nomadas Hostel (Hammock 6$, Shared Bedroom 8$, Privatroom 18-30$).There are a lot of bagpackers from everywhere ( Netherlands, England, USA, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, ...). It takes only 30 minutes to found a lot of new friends there. Since the first day, i am on tour with the whole hotel - drinking, dancing and sightseeing tours - and we have really a lot of fun.

Weekend in Merida and Chichen Itza

We went with 3 other volunteers to Merida on a rented car... here, internet is king! We found that by reserving online on Executive car rentals, we paid half the price compared to the price listed in the agency. On top of it all, the reservations do not require any credit card information. We got ourselves a 5-seater Nissan Tsuru for 67 USD for 2 days (it's probably cheaper to pay in USD since you'll be charged in pesos in the end at a ridiculous exchange rate). We arrived in Merida 4 hours l...

What is the *******n point of mosquitos??? I left Flores in Guatemala two days ago at 6am. My original plan was to spend a day in San Ignacio in Belize then head up to Merida, this soon changed. IŽd been feeling a little under the weather so I decided in the morning to try and get a bus straight through to Chetumal in Mexico, the bus was going that direction anyway. I slipped the bus driving 10 dollars and he agreed to let me travle the extra distance. Around lunch time we crossed the border ...

Oaxaca, San Cristobal and Merida

OK friends been a bit slack so am going to give you a snapshot of our travels since Mexico City. We left Mexico City on Friday 13th February 2009 after getting our visa from The Brazilian Embassy the previous afternoon. We took a minivan shuttle to Oaxaca which took about 8 hours . It traversed some very barren land after leaving the huge city and we crossed some very winding and very high mountain passes that left some passengers a little concerned as the cornering took some getting used to....

Into the Yucatan

Becs 7/6: We arrived to Merida about 9am after our overnight bus from Palenque. Cabbed it to our hostel and unfortunately our room wouldn't be ready for about 4hrs which given how hot and humid it was this early in the morning and how tired we were, this wasn't the best news. Also were told our room didn't have a private bathroom as Mark thought he had booked, and to get to our room we had to got through the dorm room where it was just tacked onto the end. This is where I was thinking that fo...

Merida - The Yucatan Peninsula

After an OK bus journey and a nice bit of sleep (we have our neck pillows, ear plugs and eye shades sponsered by British Airways) we arrived into Merida at 5 in the morning. We had booked the Hostel de Peregrino. We obviously had to wake the young fella that was working, and he left us in and put us to bed. Actually, another example of a nice Mexican... the taxi driver we got from the bus station to the hostel stayed with us and made sure that we got into the hostel ok, he even made sure that...

Going solo

Helen left on Thursday morning, so I am now flying solo. I wish she could stay but also feel excited to be completely independent now! I've moved on to Merida but am disappointed with it: the weather is seriously wet and the locals are spiky (lots of hassle from local men, some of them quite aggressive - haven't had that anywhere else). I felt a bit low on Friday afternoon but then found Walmart which was some consolation; bought some socks and grapefruit BeLight. Visited amazing iguana-infes...

Merida

After Chichen Itza we continued to Merida. It seems like a nice city, very alive. It's colonial, with many old nice buildings, plazas and cathedrals. But the traffic is a problem and it's too noisy. I'll stick around for a couple of days, maybe do some daytrips. We'll see..
