Judgement Day

Konbanwa everyone! Well, my time here in Tokyo is coming to a close. Tokyo is a GREAT place to visit, but no way in heck would I want to live here. I know, I know, three days and I`m ready to pass judgement on one of the largest, most powerful cities in the world...but, trust me, you can capture the feeling of Tokyo life very quickly. Just get on the subway at 8:30am and you`ll know what I`m talking about. The maddening surge of people spilling forth from their homes, packing into the subway ...

Tokyo: The Big Japple.

Ben Reporting: Finally, we arrive in Tokyo, one of the world's monster cities, an unstoppable surge of life and movement. City of 12.9 million people. For general comparison, Sydney has about 4.6 million and both London and New York have just less than ten (not combined). So Tokyo is a big place, in fact it's so big you can see Mount Fuji from its centre on a clear day, though apparently, due to haze and smog, clear days are rare. We arrive in Tokyo at about 3 pm, from Osaka after a three-hou...

Golly, there sure are a lot of people here.

... have chosen the head drum. Maybe next time.

The fourth of July brought more overcast skies in the morning, so our tentative plans to head up to Mt. Fuji got scrapped. Instead we headed downtown to Tokyo Eki (that’s Tokyo station to you and me Russ, I’m really picking up the local vernacular…) and a quick walk west to the Imperial Palace. You can’t actually get into the palace except for twice a year: New Year’s ...

We left our run a bit late and so couldn't get in toi see much but we were very taken with the revolving globe of screens showing the Earth in rotation. ... easier as the stations are all colour coded and numbered. So you go from S10 to S4 on the Slim Green Line and then transfer to the Purple line and go from Z8 to Z12 etc... believe me its easier than trying to find the Japanese Names for the stations and work it all out that way hehehe. Its also one of the safest places to be in the world.

Exploring Tokyo

5-9-07: Ueno, Akihabara, Shinjuku, & Roppongi (Busy Day!) This morning, we woke up ready to explore the city. First stop was Ueno, which appears to be a cultural mecca for Tokyo. Ueno Park reminded me of the Washington D.C. Mall - there were several cultural museums, art museums, science and history museums spread around a large park area with several fountains and temples dispersed between them. We headed to the National Museum which was a gorgeous building set ...

TOKYO - Day 15 - 17

... We headed straight for Ginza in the morning to walk around the streets and just take it all in. Lights, people, showrooms, adverts, clothes, cars, drinks, vending machines, trains passing overhead, there:s just so much that's different. And not just different, better. It's like being in the future, not just 8hrs in the future, but Minority Report in the future, or even Blade Runner. I think pictures will have to tell most of the story ...

Speeding forward but looking back

... grown out. Even on our incredibly fast bullet train from Nagoya, the city itself seems to go on for ages before we reached our destination: the heart of the beast, Tokyo Station. Population is not usually an issue we focus on in this forum, but in Tokyo it is a fact that we found not just striking, but completely unavoidable. People are as much a feature of this strange urban environment as is water in San Fransisco or mountains in Denver. Our plan was to take just a quick bite ...
