... it on the street. The line up for the Colosseum was CRAZY!! I couldn´t imagine going there during high season. Luckily we had a tip in our book to go buy your tickets at the Palatine, so we did and there was NO LINE UP!! We decided to walk around the Palatine and the Forum first seeing as how we were there. Its basically old ruins of and old city. There are tons of random half and partial walls everywhere, pillars and buildings ...
Rome, Lazio, Italy kkb-myadventure... Vatican used the red marble from the colleseum to construct the Vatician city. The Vatican does not like to refer to it as 'steeling' or 'taking', but rather 'recycling'! There is no more red marble in the world currently available, however they think there may be some in Egypt. The Vatican is concerned because the value of what they have may diminish! Apparently the Italian government has set aside 9 million Euros to continue with a dig, under the ...
Rome, Lazio, Italy paulagermann... but the weather was splendid. The paths at the Eremo were so peaceful as well, probably the most satisfying moments of solitude I've had in a long time. The Basilica of St. Francis, which houses the saint's tomb, was unique and very interesting. It's actually divided into an upper and lower church, centered around a cloister courtyard. The sunset in Assisi was breathtaking. . . 3) On a free Friday afternoon, I did some research for two upcoming projects ...
Rome, Lazio, Italy bleonard... one third of the way when realized that I was lost, backtracked, ended up on St. Peters Square (by myself!). Went inside the Basillica, saw the Pieta, and took time to pray. Lo and behold, there was adoration! I was so psyched. After that, it turned out that there was 5pm mass. I ended up reaching my goal\completing my dream here in Rome. Mass at the Vatican was up there.. Ended up going back to the campsite (yes, Ive been living on campsites ...
Rome, Italy angelanst... The food was great - pizzas and sides for both of us - I ordered bruschetta and it arrived in the form of one massive piece of bread doused with Olive oil and crushed garlic and covered in a mound of fresh tomatoes...no complaints here. The waitress arrived in the form of an ancient old woman with a harsh voice but pleasant manner and standing just shy of 5' tall, the bill arrived in the form of a hand written scrap of paper so yeah I'd say the atmosphere was ...
Rome, Italy gojenngo... with her watch face and shattered the glass. Her watch stopped working and the glass was shattered into such tiny pieces that when the guide tried to pick them up there was nothing there. I guess the pieces will always be there, mixed in with the sand. After our Scavi tour we went and had lunch at a little restaurant on the corner on the way to our apartment where I had the best lasagna that I had ...
Rome, Italy loissg... he is an avid traveler- he will hit the 50 country mark on this 5-week trip, he gets along well with his family- he's taking his mother on vacation for the first part of his trip and then he will bring his brother for the second part of the trip. He is an immigration lawyer in LA- I know what you're thinking LA right? but where better if you're an immigration lawyer. He's a graduate of UCLA in 2005, he's 27 years old, he's a ...
Rome, Italy reddev... intact for 22 centuries. We learned that this building was ransacked too. That actually became a common theme we learned. When the Christians took control of Rome, they ransacked all of the ancient buildings to build everything in the Vatican City. Like the altar in St. Peter's Basilica was cast from bronze completely stolen form the ceiling of the Pantheon. Its unbelievable that we are in Rome. It almost doesn't seem right that people actually live on top of ancient Rome.
Rome, Italy danorr... here taking this shot. I could have left the camera on the ground and set a timer, but I wanted to make it that little bit more perfect :) The location of this photo is also the scene of a play we watch in a few days time - which you'll read about in a later blog. So it's now time to look for food. A few guides have suggested to avoid food around these touristy areas. As I walk back, i notice the Colloseum down the road. Wicked. I sort of stand by the side of the path ...
