Ubud: Sweaty Nights and an Ugly Wife

A travel blog entry by thegordo

Monday, 29 October We return back to Bali, this time our destination is a place called Ubud. The fast boat back to Padang Bai is nowhere near as mental as the first one we took to get out to Gili T. This boat is functional and safe and part of me is disappointed by this. When we disembark i spot the old buzzard who robbed me on the way out to Gili …

Off to Ubud for the weekend!

Off to Ubud for the weekend! Trinita and I got a Perama bus to Ubud, arriving at Nick’s Pension mid afternoon. The drive was beautiful and arriving at the rather fancy Nick’s Pension was a real treat! Trinita and I were to share a room so I had no idea where we would land up…well in comparison to all the other places I had stayed …

Purnama Sasih Kedasa - Fullmoon Ceremony

The full moon (which has particular importance to the Balinese Hindus) falls on this day and ceremonies are held throughout the Hindu temples all across Bali. The Balinese that adhere to the Hindu Dharma religion will take offerings of food, fruit and flowers to the temple to be blessed by a priest. It is the essence of theses offerings …

Last day in Ubud

We went out shopping at a local market in the morning, lay in the sun all afternoon and then went out for our last dinner with Irwin. After dinner Trinita and I went to see a Kechak fire dance which was really something special and a wonderful way to end a amazing weekend in Ubud! Another gorgeous day living the life of a backpacker in beautiful Bali *sigh*

Morning meandering

A travel blog entry by k8ttie

I decided to get up early and go for a walk alone. Time alone as a single traveller is not as much as you would think and I wanted to just wander, aimlessly in my own headspace. I had a lovely walk and made it to the monkey forest where I got to see the monkeys having breakfast with no other tourists around because it was too early - …

    Good Find Only...

Nick's Pension is a great estate from which to explore the quaint town of Ubud.

Its set of buildings are thoughtfully crafted with the traditional Balinese culture in mind and actually features an alter by the river that runs through the estate.

The staff are efficient, friendly and polite and accommodating.

The estate is set among impressive scenery that instantly makes you feel a part of the culture.

The standard double room that I paid for was big and bright - I wish i could add that it was also airy but i'm afraid it wasn't so.

Nick's Pension could easily have received 5 stars if it wasn't for the following reasons:

I hadn't noticed during the booking that air-con didn't come as standard, as you kind of have to read between the lines to ascertain this. However, the standard room did have an air-con unit but in order to use it I would have to pay an extra IDR100,000 per night. The fact the room already featured a unit and that I had to pay for the remote control just seemed like a particularly bloody minded way to get more money.
After all, hotels back in the UK wouldn't charge their guests extra for wanting some heat.

The other problem was the internet connection. For 2 days out of the 3 i couldn't manage a stable connection for anything longer than 10 mins, that's if i managed to get on it at all. This can be a real frustration especially when you need to book flights to neighbouring Islands. On the 3rd day we gave up and went to the internet cafe.

The other irritant is the noise in the morning, there is a lot of it. It's not too loud but it's certainly consistent enough to rouse you first thing in the morning. During the night guests can clearly be heard. As I tend to go to bed quite late it didn't bother me much. However, for those of you who like to get your head down say around 9 - 10pm, you'll most likely be woken up.

To round things off a mocking bird is kept outside reception day and night in a small cage, which I find quite cruel. Every time I walked past I had to fight the urge to set it free.

Nice place and surroundings, friendly staff, a shame about the slight misleading non-mention of no air-con, non-existent wi-fi and poor sound insulation.

Set that mocking bird free, Nick, that thing is going crazy in that cage!

Initially when we booked this hotel, we were a bit worried that it was gonna be too noisy as it looked like it was really close to town on the map... but when we got there and saw the location, property and the rooms/buildings, we were extremely happy with our decision. It's located down a side street one road over from the main hub in between lush green rice paddys, but it has super quick & easy access thru a quiet pathway into town. Ok, so some selections for the breakfast were a bit small, but with fruit, and tea/coffee we were more than satisfied every morning - the pancakes/crepes are delish, and they delivered tea to our patio every morning before we woke up, awesome. Our room was basic and quite large, with a beautiful view.. no tv in our room which was super freeing... and no internet connection unless you're in the dining or pool areas. Don't let any of that turn you off to this hotel tho... We couldn't have been happier staying anywhere else. We will recommend it to anyone keen to stay in Ubud. I really suggest booking at the Bhisma Spa while you're there too, it was AMAZING... and cheap. Overall, it was a beautiful, comfortable, easy place to stay and we will definitely be back.
