Capital Chaos

We arrived in KL after a 200km bus journey that seemed to take forever. The coach dropped us off directly outside the Pudu Hostel which was where we had stayed last year, the newer lonely planet guide had slated it this year, but after inspection of the premises we had found it had actually improved. We continued the room sharing theme as there were no double rooms available, ending up with double bunk beds in a small cell like room with no window. It was a miracle that they actually managed ...

Ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?

Poo-du Hostel is slowly redeeming itself and edging towards a half star rating - it has achieved this by providing the hottest shower I have had since mainland Thailand, and by playing Gladiator in its 'common room' on my return there on Wednesday evening... Kuala Lumpur continues to impress although I am starting to think that I have enraged either the gods of travel, or maybe Saint Jude, as it is again lashing it down here - about the eighth day in a row during which it has rained torrentia...

Kinda Late in Kuala Lumpur

3am, bright lights, tall buildings, big city, downtown Kuala Lumpur. "Last stop!" shouts the bus driver and I'm awakened from dreams of pheasant hunting with my (now deceased) Labrador Buck....God I miss that dog. 'Damn, I think to myself, how do I get myself into these situations, yet again I find myself in the center of a huge foreign city with no room, no currency, no sleep, in the early hours of the morning. First Mumbai, then Kathmandu, now Kuala Lumpur.' Do I subconsciously do this on p...

Enough of the big cities, already!

... a bird park, butterfly farm, etc. We had to catch the trains to get there, and then spent ages walking around trying to find the park. We could see it – but just couldn’t easily get to it because of the major highways that we had to cross, or because of the barricades. It wasn’t the kind of park that we expected where you could just arrive at the edge and walk through it. It was really designed for cars where you would drive from place to ...

Ohh so Happy to be Back on Solid Ground

... out of the sky. Needless to say, we didn't. Of all of us, Sam handled the flight the best. Every time there was some turbulence, he shot me a smiling glance as if to say 'How about this for a theme park ride?''. The rest of the time he very capably amused himself on his array of games consoles. 12 hours later, and after the fourth episode of in-flight terrifyingness, I was reduced to a quivering wreck and was ready for putting on a parachute and jumping from 50 ...

KL Batu Caves

... store - i was out of reading books. The hawkers stalls were out o it was the biggest mission trying to make it through the crowd without being pulled in by the locals. It was then dinner and back to our room to plan tomorrow. I think we are going to get up extremely early and walk to the patronas towers so we can get tickets to do the tour. Our roommate Cassandra is also going to join us. Will let you know how it goes tomorrow.

Met some Kiwi guys and went to this "British" Beatles bar and sat around the table on cusions. Free drinks all night. Again. Backcombed my hair into a massive afro and got chased down the street by a little boy who like ...

Late Night Eats - Mamak Style!

... trip to Bangsar had to be roti tisu - a sweet bread that's pounded and pulled to be wafer thin, then rolled into a cone and frosted with sugar - for a couple of reasons. For one thing, the crispy bread seemed to melt away into buttery smoothness in our mouths.

For another, ripping apart and eating a giant sugary wizard's cap (see below) is just too ...

Finding a Hostel/Visa Run/Batu CAves

... not, could not, stop at any other place. Although it would be a good little place to get souvenirs, I didn't want to deal with these people. And I'd been carrying my purse tightly in my hands the whole night since I heard pick-pocking was big in that market. I decided to just sit down and have some dinner while the local people played music in front of our little café in the middle of Chinatown with people walking all around. It was a good little dinner and the beer I drank ...
