We were up and out early to catch the boat from Wellington to the south Island. It was a 3 hour trip so we kicked back and tried to sleep. Once we arrived in Picton we met the Magic Bus that would be taking us to our first overnight stop on the South Island, the town of Nelson. Once we drove out of Picton we started to get a taste of the amazing scenery that the South Island is so famous for, in fact the next few blog entries will probably just be just pictures of scenery. We arrived in the t...
Greymouth, South Island, New Zealand alandrachThe map pin has finally not shown the route I took. It was either send it to Greymouth, or do a stupidly short entry in Christchuch. My thinking is actually that I'd like to recommend the hostel in Greymouth, if you ever had the misfortune of going there. It's a jewel in the incredibly rusty crown that is the damp, seaside town. More about that later. But suffice it to say that I went from Queenstown to Christchurch, and then to Greymouth and back, finally flying north from Christchurch to Au...
Greymouth, South Island, New Zealand alanvIt was still raining when we got to Greymouth - so it was fairly grey. But, apparently it's fairly grey on a sunny day so go figure. It was Saturday night so the owner of the Hostel told us there was a brewery tour in a half an hour, BBQ included so we said we'd go along. Monteiths is the brewery and it was a good tour. Lots of backpackers did the tour and it was a good way to meet people. Australia was playing New Zealand that evening in the final of the Rugby League World Cup so we stayed o...

Greymouth, South Island, New Zealand helium803Just a small hop off in Greymouth, taking in an enjoyable short walk and a much more fun tour of the Monteith's brewery! Greymouth is one of the largest towns on the west coast of New Zealand, with a population of 11,000. Whilst slightly lacking in a broad range of things to get up to, it was still a fairly nice place to spend a few days. The walk out of the township took in great views of the urban area as well as panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. The brewery tour provided a nice p...
Greymouth, New Zealand janicooI left Christchurch on Sunday 3rd February and caught the Tranzalpine train to Greymouth which lies on the West coast of the South Island. I was really looking forward to the tranzalpine trip as it is a 4 hour trip though the mountains and is supposed to be one of the most impressive train journeys in the world! Arriving in Greymouth was a bit of a let-down as it is just a small town with a few shops, all of which were shut (because it was a Sunday) so the only place I found open was KFC! It ...
Wanaka, New Zealand karinabrownOur bus ride took us by a wonderful walk called Foulwind. It was a short hour trek along the wild west coast. We had fun trying to video some of the sounds so we hope you enjoy it too. Also, there was a seal colony where we saw a few calves that were so fun to watch. Cute size too. The next stop was for a quick view of some rock formations called Punakaiki Pancake Rocks. They are named that because the rocks on the coast look like stacks of pancakes. You will just have to see the pics to unde...
